| gday guys/gals, i am tracing my paternal family tree and have discovered my great grandfather (jack BROWN) is from Fredrikstadt born abt 1883, my grandfather (jack BROWN)was born here in australia in 1909 im sorry i dont have more information but it would be great to find more, many thanks in advance |

Hi,
This is DIS gravminner fra Norge (basically a database of headstone transcriptions and some pictures) the only one with Brown as part of name at Fredrikstad:
2591279 Johan Willy Brown Hanssen 1401 1914 0702 1998 03 08 009 Leie gravlund Fredrikstad
Brown could be a word for word translation of the Norwegian word for the color brown. It might be a "sounds like." Or possibly a completely different name.
Found only one person in the 1900 Norwegian census born in 1883 Fredrikstad with the name Brun. His name was Sigurd, living with his parents and siblings in Kraakstad, Akershus. He also has a sibling of the name Hans (which name is related to Johan, John, which is the origin of Jack the nickname in US) Link if all goes well:

ok have found naturalisation certificate for John BROWN, here are the details off it
john BROWN
05/08/1885 in Frederikshal (fredrikstadt??) Norway
he was a carpenter
immigrated from Norway to Bristol (England) then onto Rockhampton (Australia) arriving here 07/1906
he had 3 boys (all born in Australia)

Great bit of info...
Unfortunately the Norwegian digital archive appears to be down today and the parish registers for baptismal records covering Fredrickstad & Fredrikhald are there,
Will look at www.familysearch.org {Did look in Norwegian Baptisms, found 4 entries answering to jon brun 1885 and none had the birthdate given above.]

| One of the records refers to a WWI enlistment for John Brown from Nassua New York and is probably not relelevant. But the other two refer to John "Jack" Brown born abt March 1885 in Norway. This is a part of a family tree belonging to a Paul Carroll of Australia. Unfortunately he does not list any further information about Jack' s Norwegian background. There are some interesting documents about the military life of John "Jack" Brown attached to the family tree. |

Hi,
Since the date Jack Brown moved to England isn't known, I did check for John Brown b. 1885 Norway in the England & Wales census for 1901 and it found none.
