In the Digitalarkivet display of records from this census, I would like to know the meaning of the abbreviations entitled "Position". These include: HU (I assume husfru); D (I assume datter); SH; and FL. My grandfather is designated SH...would like to know the meaning of that.

Also, would like help in locating the Bergen street called Sondre Pothullet...Mapquest cannot find it.

Thanks,
Ron Iverson

The abbreviation SH is new to me, the others are
hf = husfar = husband
hm = husmor = housewife
hp = (selv) hovedperson = head of household
hu = hustru = wife
s = sønn = son
d = datter = daughter
tj = tjenestetyende = servant
fl = losjerende, hørende til familien = lodger, related to the family
el = enslig losjerende = single lodger, not related to the family
b = besøkende = visitor

I don't believe Søndre Pothullet exists in a map of today. Persons living there belonged either to Korskirken or Bergen Domkirke, see typical street view here. Lukk (Lock) the view and click on "gatebilder" and you will be able to move around in Bergen city.

Søndre (Southern) Potthullet does not exist, it was a former slum/backstreet.

This is the location of "Pothullet". The area was infamous for its pubs and brothels, and frequently visited by sailors. In 1895, the citizens of Pothullet went to the local government and requested a new street address as a replacement for the "ridiculous" Pothullet.
Their wishes was granted, and the new street addresses became Mitzell-smauet and Ross-smauet, named after two naval-heroes from Bergen, who defeated pirates in distant waters. "Smau" is a Bergen -dialect variant of smug, ie "narrow alley".

Ross-smauet.. not for cars!

The abbreviation SH (Selv Hovedperson) has the same meaning as hp, head of household.
