The links to information on the Ancestry.com website only work for persons who are subscribers to that company's website. All others only see an advertisement inviting them to also contribute money.

The real joy of this hobby is being able to do it yourself. You can! There are a number of excellent materials available online for your study and the number of Norwegian resources available online for research increases almost daily. Study, practice, enjoy!

The detail available in the extensive parish church records is a marvelous gift from Norway. The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005. To be able to use the parish records you must first know WHERE in Norway you want to search for this documentation.

The Digitalarkivet web site - (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar)
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
When you click on that link another page will present a short list of choices - choose "Read the digitized parish registers"[English version]/"Lesa skanna kykrebøker" [Norwegian version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
(http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html)

For the protection of privacy, there are limits for how recent records can be:

- Birth and baptism records up to and including 1929
- Confirmation records up to and including 1934
- Marriage and banns records - no limits
- Civil marriage up to and including 1950
- Death, burial and stillbirth records up to and including 1930
- Migration records - no limits
- Joins and leavings of the State Church up to and including 1950
- Records about dissenters up to and including 1950

If you cross these limits while browsing a register or a list, you will not see the digitised image, but a message informing you that the image cannot be displayed.

Norway has a tradition of publishing history and genealogy books for many rural districts of the country called 'bygdebøker'. You might be lucky enough to have had ancestors from one of the areas which has one or more good 'bygdebøker' published about it.
Learn about 'bygdebøker' (http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/bygdebok.html)
Bygdebøker and Ættarbøker can be helpful but are definitely secondary sources of information -- any research done in them should be verified in the primary sources such as the parish church records.

Here from www.newslibrary.com a couple of "snippets" on her 2nd husband John Halvorson:

From the Grand Forks County Heritage Book, published in 1976 pg 171 in the story of T. S. Nygaard and Christie Dokken, "Marie ( Mrs Kittle Sagen) Grand Forks, " is listed as
their daughter. Why do you think she was adopted?

Here is Marie's marriage from MOMS:

Does your database at www.rootsweb.com contain the same information as the database you linked to in your initial inquiry?
Here is the rootsweb address:

I see that you mentioned on Margyll's page in the rootsweb database Ole Nygaard, Lars Nygaard, Knute Nygaard and Lukris Nygaard. Ole, Lars and Knute are brothers of T.S. Nygaard, sons of Sjugard Olsen Nygaard. Lukris is Knute's wife. These Nygaards came from Hol, Hallingdal, Norway.

Of the sites I've linked to, www.newslibrary.com does have some cost --the looks are free (up to and including the first paragraph) but if you want the whole article you have to pay for that.

Marie Sagen's obit was published in the Grand Forks Herald on Tuesday 29 Sept 1987 pg 5A col 2:

"Marie Sagen
Marie C. Sagen, 96, formerly of 417 Cottonwood St, died Monday, Sept 28, 1987 in Good Samaritan Nursing Center, East Grand Forks.

Services will be at 2p.m. Thursday in United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks. Visitation will be from 5 to 8p.m. Wednesday with a 7:30 prayer service in Amundson Funeral Home, and for one hour before services in the church.

Marie Nygard was born March 10, 1891, in Mekinock, N.D. , the daughter of Torger and Christine Nygard. She grew up in Mekinock and married Kittel Sagen in May 1923 in Grand Forks. They made their home in Grand Forks. Kittel Sagen died Jan. 14, 1986.

Survivors are son, Harland, Renton, Wash.; daughter Margyll Shull (Mrs. John) Halverson, Grand Forks, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; and brothers Melvin and Bert, both of Grafton, N.D.

She was preceded in death by a son Carroll and brothers Henry and Clifford."

Marie's mother's (adoptive or biological) was published in Hallingen in March 1957 issue, page 33:

"Mrs.

Nothing in the records I've seen lends support to the adoption story. However if there is something it may be in the old church records of Ness Lutheran Church and/or Middle Grove Lutheran Church. These church's registers have been microfilmed and are available for loan through the archives of the ELCA church. Rental fee is about $15 / month usage + postage. Or if you still have a relative or two on the ground in Grand Forks that you could draft into service there is a set of the microfilm at the Special Collections area of the Chester Fritz Library on the campus of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Apparently Marie Nygaard was married before her marriage to Kittel Sagen, from the Grand Forks Herald, Wednesday, 8 July 1914:

"A pretty wedding took place last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Nygaard in Mekinock, when their daughter, Miss Marie, was united in marriage to Albert Kirkeide."

Here is the record found in the Grand Forks County Marriage License search:

1 Jul 1914 Marie Nygaard Albert Kirkeide 6 26 14-307

And then a tragedy, Grand Forks Herald, Tuesday 5 Nov 1918:

"Three Deaths in 24 Hours
After a brief illness the two-year-old son of Albert Kirkeide died Sunday morning. No funeral arrangements have been announced....."

Albert would have been prime-time for the WWI draft registration. Since you already have Ancestry you could look for his registration.

Transcription of the 1920 Census of Thomas Nygard family including Mary Kerkeide. Interesting she is listed as married but Albert Kirkeide in the same census is listed with his parents as single (although in the 1930 & 1940 censuses he is listed as divorced):

A search in the Grand Forks County Marriage License search does not find Torger / Thomas S Nygard's and Christine Dokken's marriage. That's not surprizing as an earlier research project did not find the second marriage of T.S. Nygard's father Syver Olson Nygaard to Malina Kirkeide in there either. There is however a Christine Nygard marriage to Sander Rue. This Christine is the daughter of Malina Kirkeide, apparently going by her step family's surname.

The reported (in her obituary) siblings of Christine Dokken Nygard are mentioned as Mrs. Carl Peterson and Albert Dokken. Albert Dokken is living in Regina, Saskatchewan and Mrs. Peterson in Argyle, Minnesota.

Searches for marriages of Albert Dokken and _____ Dokken to Carl Peterson in the Grand Forks Marriage License search were also unsuccessful, except for this possible entry:

27 May 1897 Mary Docker Carl Peterson 2 29 4-255

This may be Albert Dokken in the 1916 Prairie provinces census in Canada. His birthyear is given as 1885 and birthplace as U.S. and year of migration to Canada as 1900 with wife Annie and children:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KMPB-TZ1

In the Ancestry 1911 Canadian census, he is probably also found as Albert Docken b. Aug 1885 Norway year of migration as 1904 with wife Annie age 23 and a child Borlie age 2 living in Saltcoats District in Saskatchewan.

There are numerous Dokken families living in the Manvel / Mekinock area of Grand Forks County. A majority of these are from Hemsedal, a side valley in Hallingdal, Norway. Hemsedal is the place in Norway identified as Christine's birth place. However, I've looked through the baptismal records of Hemsedal and found no Christine / Kristi born on her given birthdate & year. There are a few Kirsti's born there but on different years and dates, none of whom have been identified with a farm named Dokken or Nygard, nor a farm with dokken as part of its name.

Hi Jen,

Good news I think!

There are 2 perftinent records on Christine and her parentage in the Rowberg Biographical file.

In an obituary on her published in the Decorah [Iowa] Posten on 3 Feb 1955 is this detail:
".... Hendes bedstefar tog Homestead i Middle Grove Kommunen og hendes Far, Arne Dokken, tog homestead i Manvel-Middle Grove Kommunen. Den 6te August 1889 blev hun gift med Thomas Nygaard...."

Roughly translated it says Christine Nygaard's grandfather took a homestead in the Middle Grove community and her father Arne Dokken took a homestead in the Manvel- Middle Grove community. On the 6th of August 1889 Christine married Thomas Nygaard..

The other record of interest in the Rowberg File is a large article about Christine & Thomas Nygard's 50th wedding anniversary published in the Grand Forks (N.D.) Skandinaven on 4 Aug 1939
"... Mrs. Nygard, eller Kristine Dokken. som hennes jentenavn var, er født i Skuredalen, Hallingdal, 20 Jan 1870...."

A search of the baptismal records of both Hol and Aal, Hallingdal did not find record of Christine.

A search at www.glorecords.blm.gov land patents search found this Arne Halvorson Dokken homestead:
This link doesn't work, don't know if it's a temporary or permanent problem. If permanent, I'll copy & paste in the information about the homestead
NDMTAA 089449 DOKKEN, ARNE HALVORSON 6/2/1900 5292 ND 5th PM 153N - 051W NW¼ 26 Grand Forks

In the 1900 census transcription online at www.familysearch.org, Arne and his family, including a son named Albert, are found here, with many errors in both transcription and a very liberal rendering of the name Dokken in the original schedule:

Arne Dokken in 1900 US census:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9VJ-8DG

Arne's birth month and year are given in the original schedule as May 1840. A quick search in the Aal, Hallingdal parish registers found him, #88:
Source information: Buskerud county, Ål, Parish register (official) nr. I 5 (1825-1848), Birth and baptism records 1840, page 104.
Permanent pagelink: www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1148&idx_id=1148&uid=ny&idx_side=-107" target="_blank">http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1148&idx_id=1148&uid=ny&idx_side=-107

His parents's residence is Gautedokken. In Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume 5, pg 85-87 is found the story about Arne and his parents and siblings. It says he married Birgit Guttormsdatter Aslegard, had the farm Tollerud and about 1885 went to America. In Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume 7 pages 480-482 has the story about Birgit's siblings and her parents. There is also this brief note:

"Ved folketelj. i 1875 hadde Guttorm og Margit ogsa ei fosterdtr: Kristi Olsdtr f 1870 i Modum...." Which means roughly in the 1875 census schedule Guttorm and Margit (Birgit's parents) had also a foster child named Kristi Olsdatter born 1870 in Modum.

A check in the Modum parish registers found Kristi's birth and baptism, #88 49:
Source information: Buskerud county, Modum, Parish register (official) nr. 10 (1865-1876), Birth and baptism records 1870, page 67.
Permanent pagelink: www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5888&idx_id=5888&uid=ny&idx_side=-64" target="_blank">http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5888&idx_id=5888&uid=ny&idx_side=-64

She was born on 20 Jan 1870, not in Hemsedal, not in Hol but Modum. She was illegitmate the daughter of Ole Olsen Ronningen and Bergit Guttormsdatter who were both from Aal (up till 1870 Hol was an annex to Aal). So Christine was "Halling" all the way!

Here the family is as they left through Oslo( Kristi is on the following page):
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=21&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=61106#nedre

So Arne Dokken was her stepfather and Guttorm and Margit were not just her foster parents but her grandparents as well

There are still many mysteries for you to solve in your ancestry.
And there are many details to flesh out. This was a fun research to do, thanks for bringing to the forum.

Jackie M.
