I am trying to find out more about a 4 times great grandmother who's name is Bertha K Hovde or Hovda. She married Anders Knutson about 1836 in the Talgje Church. Anders died the same year my 3 times great grandfather Knute Andersson Gaard was born. I'm sure she probably remarried and maybe had more children.

Knud Andersen of the Gaard farm was born 26 May 1837 in Finnøy, Rogaland, Norway. His parents are listed as Anders Knudsen of the Gaard farm and Berthe Olsdatter. One of the witnesses for the baptism is an Ole Hovde?

The online church records also show the marriage of Anders Knudsen of the Gaard farm and Berthe Olsdatter of the Hovde farm in June of 1836. Both are listed as 23 years old.

There is a set of excellent bygdeboks for Finnøy and the Gaard farm is included in that work. I've used it in the past and found that it also has excellent photographs.

Berthe appears in the birth records for Finnøy, 13 Dec 1812 -- these records were kept before they started using standarized formats.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
Clicking on "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] will bring up another screen and listing to choose from. Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

Your 4 times great grandfather Anders Knudsen died July 22 1838 only 23 years of age, see #6.
He was baptized March 2 1815, see 4th record. His parents were Knud and Anne Gaard who were married Jan 8 1815, see 2nd record left page. Knud Thorssen was a widower and Anne Andersdatter came from Meling.

I take it that your 3 times great grandfather Knute Andersson Gaard is the one born May 26 1837, see #13. The mother here is recorded as Berthe Olsdatter.

The parents were married June 18 1836, see #6.

Widow Berthe Olsdatter, Gaard married Christopher Andersen, Gaard April 4 1839, see #8, their fathers were witnesses.

Christopher was baptized Febr 20 1814, see 1st record in 1814.
Parents were Anders and Anne Gaard who were married Jan 1 1809, see 1st record on right page - Anders Olssen, Gaard and Anne Christophersdatter, Østebøe.

Anders with parents and siblings in 1801.
Anne with parents, siblings and grandparents in 1801.

Thanks so much for the information and instruction on how to use the online records. I just have another question about Gaard(Gard)farm. How many families farmed this farm? Was it broken into different sections?

The number of 'subdivisions' of the Gaard farm in Finnøy, Rogaland varied through the years. Yes, it was divided into user sections. The published bygdeboks for Finnøy, Rogaland cover that quite completely.

I know from actual experience with those books because I had ancestors who also lived on that farm but at least two or three generations before yours. I made copies of the pages that I was most interested in for MY family history but just checked and the family of Anders Knudsen and Berta Olsdatter is just starting to be mentioned at the very very end of those copies. You'll want to start your reading at page 270 of what I believe was volume III of that book series.
