Yes and skutene means 'the ships'. The printed Haugen as you say does not mention 'small'. However, old icelandic 'skuta' does mean a small craft. I have a vision of a visitor standing on the cliff tops and having the leisure craft being pointed to him or her as 'skutene'. Anyway the word is obviously not dialect or local. The biggest problem I have had translating old fiction has been the spelling reforms to the Norwegian language sorry I have forgotten the date.
