Martin P Hogseth was born April 19, 1862 in Elverum, Hedmark, Norway. I am trying to gather birth and death information on his parents. I have been advised his father was Peder Johnsen, born 1821, and his mother was Marte Oldsdr, born 1822. Other siblings of Martin were Johan b. 1851, Ole b 1854, Jens b. Nov 9, 1855, Juline b. Dec 26, 1965, and Amelia b. July 1869. Thank you!

Thank you for this information. Peder and Marthe's first child was Johan. I have him as born in 1851. Since Peder and Marthe were married Oct 11, 1851, it would seem either Johan was born later, they were married sooner, or Johan was born before they were married, or within weeks after the marriage. Could you please clarify? Also, by any chance do you know the death dates of Peder and Marthe? Thanks again! --Steve

The Norwegian resources are available to everyone -- they are free.

The real joy of this hobby is being able to do it yourself. You can! There are a number of excellent materials available online for your study and the number of Norwegian resources available online for research increases almost daily. Study, practice, enjoy!

Norwegian censuses of 1910, 1900,1875 (only partially online), 1865 and 1801 are online as searchable databases. Two websites with different search functions and strengths can be used.

The detail available in the extensive parish church records is a marvelous gift from Norway. The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005. To be able to use the parish records you must first know WHERE in Norway you want to search for this documentation.

The Digitalarkivet web site - (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar)
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
When you click on that link another page will present a short list of choices - choose "Read the digitized parish registers"[English version]/"Lesa skanna kykrebøker" [Norwegian version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
(http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html)

For the protection of privacy, there are limits for how recent records can be:

- Birth and baptism records up to and including 1929
- Confirmation records up to and including 1934
- Marriage and banns records - no limits
- Civil marriage up to and including 1950
- Death, burial and stillbirth records up to and including 1930
- Migration records - no limits
- Joins and leavings of the State Church up to and including 1950
- Records about dissenters up to and including 1950

If you cross these limits while browsing a register or a list, you will not see the digitised image, but a message informing you that the image cannot be displayed.

Norway has a tradition of publishing history and genealogy books for many rural districts of the country called 'bygdebøker'. You might be lucky enough to have had ancestors from one of the areas which has one or more good 'bygdebøker' published about it.
Learn about 'bygdebøker' (http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/bygdebok.html)
Bygdebøker and Ættarbøker can be helpful but are definitely secondary sources of information -- any research done in them should be verified in the primary sources such as the parish church records.

Peder and Marthe's first child, Johan, was born July 14 1851 (before they were married) and baptized the same day as their marriage, see #117.

Thank you Einar and others for your input! Of Peder and Marthe and their children, I have much information for several of them, although I still need the following: birth/death dates of Ole: birth DAY of Amelia (July __ 1869) and death dates of Peder, Marthe and Johan. For Jens, I have his birth date, November 9, 1855, but I have never found any record of his death, which I strongly suspect happened in the USA. The family lost track of him around 1890, last seen in Wisconsin USA.

Thanks for the Emilie/Amelia's birth date! The cemetery link did not offer much help; if I knew Norwegian and more on the geography, I might have a chance to find the info I am looking for. Hopefu;lly more people will provide me some of the dates I need. All and any help is most appreciated. --Steve

You don't have to be able to read Norwegian to use the church records -- and the church records is where you are going to find death records of that time period.

The headings of the church records are printed in Norwegian but those are translated for you in a link I gave you earlier.

How to get to the scanned records at the Digitalarkivet website was also given earlier.

For death records you will just have to go through the records - page after page the time period when any specific person may have died (after they were last found in records and up to the time when they no longer appear in records -- sometimes that can be a long long time period). Good luck.

The scanned church books for Elverum, click here

You can start with the two records below, its easier than expected.

Married farmer Ole Pedersen Hogseth b. Oct. 1. 1853 on Hogseth died of stomac canser on Hogseth March 19. 1903.

Married farmer Peder Pedersen Hogseth b. March 30. 1859 on Hogseth died of canser on Lillehoff Nov. 11. 1926.

Kare, Thank you for the death dates on Marthe, birth and death dates on Ole, and death date on son Peder. And also for their occupations and causes of death.
All I need now is the death date on father Peder (b.1821) and the death date of son Johan (b. 1851).
To Mr. Hopkins: I appreciate your advice, but some of the links do not open, and with so many links, and also not knowing all the possible geographies, I feel I would need to have some in-depth training to effectively navigate around all these different sites. My sense is it would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Whereas you may be very adept at cruising around all these various sites, most people - myself included - are not. That is why we are asking for help. My apologies. Thank you again! --Steve
