i'm trying to find info on my gr,gr, grandfather. he was born in Stavenger(i think) on Nov 11, 1835. He married Sophia Danielson(of Stavenger), born June 17, 1841. I can't find any Sorens on the passenger lists that match his age. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Tks

If this is your guy in the 1900 census, it says that he was born in 1835 and came to US in 1836. If that is so he had to come with his parents:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MS49-7HN

In the first volume of Norwegian Immigrants to the United States:a Biographical Directory, 1825-1850, Volume One 1825-1843, there are 3 Søren Olsen listings:
1. Søren Olsen b about 1831?
2. Søren Olsen Midbø b1813
3. Søren Olsen Sørum b 1823

1. is the likeliest match to your biographical information (and within the +/- 5 years rule of thumb.) He came on a ship called Enigheden which arrived at New York from Stavanger on 14 Sept 1837.

With him were his parents Ole Pederson b. 1804?, Anne Baarsdatter b. 1806?, and 2 siblings Alethe Olsdatter b. 1834? and Rachel Olsdatter b. 1846?

No further information is given for this family but a number of the other shipmates settled in LaSalle County, Illinois amongst other places.

There are 2 sources listed for the passenger list of this ship:
Utvandrer fra Rogaland and "Four Immigrant Shiploads of 1836 and 1837 by Henry Cadbury.

Also a transcription of the passenger list is found here at norway heritage with a different interpretation of Ole's patronymic as Reierson, occupation of carpenter, from Stavanger. #s 78-82:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=544

The Enigheden Søren is baptism #214:
Source information: Rogaland county, Domkirken in Stavanger, Parish register (official) nr. A 9 (1821-1832), Birth and baptism records 1831, page 127.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=15879&idx_id=15879&uid=ny&idx_side=-129

Here is this family in the 1850 census transcription. Interesting that they are in Missouri:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=88&filnamn=US1850&gardpostnr=10916#nedre

If the research at this memorial at findagrave is correct then the Enigheden Soren could be eliminated:

Where did the date of birth you gave for Soren come from?

The closest Søren baptism in Stavanger I see to that date is this one #5 b 13 Nov 1835:

Source information: Rogaland county, Domkirken in Stavanger, Parish register (official) nr. A 11 (1832-1856), Birth and baptism records 1835, no page no.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=15880&idx_id=15880&uid=ny&idx_side=-47

However he is not an Olsen. His father is named Østen so he would be an Østenson.

Here is a "call for letter" post for a Soren Olson Imbs at Ottawa, LaSalle County in 1859:

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84038582/1859-02-05/ed-1/seq-2/#date1=1836&index=10&rows=20&words=Olson+Soren&searchType=basic&sequence=0&state=&date2=1922&proxtext=soren+olson&y=14&x=10&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=1

Soren Olson and Sophia Danielson were married in LaSalle county in 1857.

Imbs is a farm in Stavanger.

I believe Søren Olsen, Imbs is the one born Sept 8 and baptized Sept 15 1833, see #34.
His parents were Ole Olsen and Anna Tørrisdatter, Imbs.

(BTW - Imbs (Ims) is a farm in Høle)

you people are simply terrific, tks for taking the time. my only birth info is from his gravestone. the posting from Kaarto(which which fits him perfectly) shows a birth date of dec 18, 1835 which seems to confirm it. the 1920 census shows immig year as 1836. so i'm still confused about baptism records and shipping records??

How do you see confirmation with two different listed birthdates? The original poster, 'robertolson', was looking for a match for a birthdate of 11 Nov 1835. The narrative linked by Kåarto refers to a birthdate of 18 Dec 1835.

What is your confusion about baptism records? The man in the linked narrative is shown as being a Latter-Day Saint -- they have quite different baptisms than did the Norwegian Lutherans.

Shipping records? Do you mean emigration records?

From the emigrant listing for 1836 it looks like Søren b. Dec 09 1835 had the following siblings:
Elen Sofie, b. July 9 1821,
Ola, b. April 24 1824,
Malena, b. March 31 1827,
Johannes, b. April 25 1830, and
Berta Serina, b. Dec 30 1832.

Parents not listed with the children, but members of the family are listed as 8.

Here is Søren Olsen Imbs b 1833 leaving Høle in 1857, third from the top Udflyttede (right page) section:

Source information: Rogaland county, Høle in Høgsfjord, Parish register (official) nr. A 2 (1855-1885), Migration records 1855-1860, page 337.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6278&idx_id=6278&uid=ny&idx_side=-328

So obviously if the emigration date on the 1900 Soren Olson is correct and the year is 1836, Soren Olson Imbs is unlikely to be the same person as the 1900 Soren Olson, coming over 20 years later.
