I am trying to locate any information in regards to my great, great grand parents

Betsy Hermundsdatter Trulsen 1849?

Lewis Lars Andreas Bruntviet Knudtson 1848?

I had births in Iowa, however I am unable to find any information.
I did see a census that a possible birth place is Norway

Thank you

Hi, to start, see this:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5079

It's important that researchers know exactly which Lars Knudsen this is, in the USA. So if you can share information from the USA, such as famiy stories, immigration record, marriage record, census record(s), death record, or obituary, great. One thing I am wondering about is: what is the source of the names you give for Lars and Betsy? (where did you read or hear those names?)

In this case, looks like like a family historian has been working on this family and shared this:
http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=46&p=surnames.knudtson

Says Lars Andreas Bruntveit Knudtson was born in 1851 in Tysnes, occupation: farmer and hotelldirektør, married in 1870, USA, to Brita Hermundsdatter, born in Mel i Sogn. Lars lived in Kensett, Iowa, USA and stayed in Iowa.

Lars [Lewis] and his wife, Brita [Betsy] had 9 children:
Rosan 1871, Henry 1874, Ellen 1876, Clara 1877, Mary 1880, Louis 1883, Bertie 1884, Clarence 1887, & Matilda 1891.

Link says Lars had a brother Jens [James] b 1852 and Knud b about 1858. Link says Jens was born in Bruntveit.

Here is a boy named Lars Andreas who was born in 1851 in Tysnes, Hordaland, to a father named Knud. Need more info/more research to know if he's yours.
Father: Knud Larsen, Tysnes
Mother: Ragnild Jensdatter
(some other forum volunteer may have a better reading of the old script)

Source: Hordaland county, Tysnes, Parish register (official) nr. A 10 (1848-1859), Birth and baptism records 1851, page 39.
See #116
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20050825010043.jpg

A Ragnhild Knudtson b 1822 and Knudt Knudtson b 1818 are buried in Old West Paint Creek Cemetery in Allamakee County, Iowa. Often times in the USA a family chooses a surname that matches for everyone (unlike the Norwegian patronymic names). Do you know if Lars's parents emigrated? This couple caught my attention because of the unusual spelling of the name Knudt.

1880 US census
Kensett Township, Worth County, Iowa
Lewis A Knudtson 29, farmer, b about 1851 in Norway
Betsey Knudtson 32, wife, keeping house, b about 1848 Norway
Rosie Knudtson 8, daughter, attending school, b Iowa
Henry Knudtson 6, son, attending school, b Iowa
Ellen Knudtson 4, daughter, b Iowa
Clara Knudtson 2, daughter, b Iowa
Mary Knudtson 4 months old, daughter, b Iowa
+ two boarders

Same 1880 census record, as found in Norwegian digital archives:
http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=11&filnamn=IOWA1880&gardpostnr=44801&merk=44801#ovre

Accordingn to the family historian on the Ancestry message board (link posted above), this would be Lars's brother Knudt. As yet no one has posted any other source for this connection.

1880 US census
Kensett, Worth, Iowa
Knudt Knudtson 22, Laborer, born in Wis., parents b Norway
Minnie Knudtson 22, wife, keeping house, b Wis., parents b Norway
Henry A Knudtson 3 Son, b Iowa
Cal Knudtson 2 Son, b Iowa

Kensett Township, Worth, Iowa, was organized in 1873, so in earlier years the family would appear under a different place name (even if living same place).

Ragnilde Jensdatter is most likely the one born Sept 6 1827 in Hafslo, #77 - parents Jens Eriksen and Agothe Hansdatter, Wedergjerde.

Aha - thanks eibache.

Marriages in Worth County, Iowa
KNUDSEN, James marries TRULSEN, Emma * 12 June 1876
KNUDTSON, Lewis A. marries TRULSON, Betsy * 28 DEC 1870
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~iaworth/data/BridesTZ.html

A marriage record often mentions the parents, so you could order a copy of the original marriage record from Worth county. Usually the fee for that is quite modest.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Back in an edit to say the family below must be the family of Betsey's father Hermund.

Possibly Betsy emigrating here [born too early to be yours??]:
Brithe Trulsdatter Meel, age 16, sailing on the
Brig Statsraad Vogt 1850, from Bergen May 10 to New York July 15
http://www.norwayheritage.com/udvandret.asp?type=passengerlist&ps=3535&jo=1757

The passenger list:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=1757&ps=3533

In 1850, traveling on the same trip (rearranged into birth order):

Truls Hermandsen Meel 54 - [possible parents for Brithe]
Thuri Larsdatter Meel 40
Elling Trulsen Meel 29
* Brithe Andersdatter Meel 27 [wife to Elling?]
Mari Trulsdatter Meel 20
Lars Trulsen Meel 17
Brithe Trulsdatter Meel 16 [born about 1834, maybe too old to be your Betsy?]
Solwie Trulsdatter Meel 11
Mons Trulsen Meel 9
Christen Trulsen Meel 6
Johannes Trulsen Meel 3

WPA Tombstone Inscription Project, Worth County, Iowa, USA

Lewis A. Knudson
Born: 1851
Died: 1922
Cemetery: KENSETT
Location: KENSETT TWP.
County: WORTH CO. - IOWA
Record Notes: LOT 198, SEE ALSO LEWIS KNUTSON

Betsey Knudson
Born: 1849
Died: 1919
Cemetery: KENSETT
Location: KENSETT TWP.
County: WORTH CO. - IOWA
Record Notes: LOT 198

You can order a copy of their death records or if none registered with county, try to get copy of church burial record. Often (not always) parents' names and place of birth and full birth date are included in death information.

The Brithe I found emigrating was born earlier.

Here's an alternate cemetery record for Lewis:
Lewis Knutson
Born: 1851
Died: 13 APR 1922
Cemetery: KENSETT
Location: KENSETT TWP.
County: WORTH CO. - IOWA
Record Notes: B. GERMANY, H/O BETSY TRILSON, F/O MRS A TJADADEN; MANLY SIGNAL 4-13-1922

http://iowawpagraves.org/view.php?id=951447

As you can see it is important to know who is the person in the USA, as much info on him/her as possible, before a match can be found in Norway!

I suspect the record notes are incorrect. It's always a process, in genealogy, to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Truls Hermandsens family moved out from Meel 1850, #1-11.

Britha Trulsdatter Meel was born March 12 1834, 14th record. Parents Truls Hermansen and Thuri Larsdatter.

Truls Hermundsens first wife was Britha Hermundsdatter - they were parents of Elling Trulsen (Oct 14 1821), Mari Trulsdatter (Dec 12 1829) and Lars Trulsen (July 29 1832).

Brithas parents Truls Hermundsen, Meel and Turi Larsdatter, Fosse were married June 2 1831, #10.

Okay, great, thanks!

The family historian (on Ancestry message board, posted earlier), referred to "Brita Hermundsdatter, born in Mel in Sogn."
So presumably that's Meel in Balestrand parish, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.

Here's a link that shows contact information for someone who has researched this family:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/par-l-m.htm

"MAEL (also found spelled MEEL, MEHL), Balestrand, Sogn og Fjordane: Elling Trulson, Brithe Andersdatter, Truls Hermundson, Turi (Thuri) Larsdatter, Lars Trulson, Mons Trulson, Christin Trulson, Johannes Trulson, Mari Trulsdatter, Brite Trulsdatter, Solvieg Trulsdatter"

Turi Larsdatter was baptized Sept 17 1808, next to last record on right page. Her parents were Lars Nielsen, Fosse and Britha Sieursdatter.

Turis parents, a grandmother and siblings in 1801.

eibache posted the March 1834 birth record of the Brithe we found immigrating with father Truls Hermandsen and mother Thure Larsdatter.
Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Balestrand, Ministerialbok nr. A 1 (1834-1846), Fødte og døpte 1834, side 1.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070302610347.jpg

I didn't find a Brithe born in 1847, 1848, 1849 in this same churchbook with a father Truls or Herman, but perhaps I simply didn't see it.
