Mr. Solem –
I don’t know if you remember me but several years ago you assisted me in obtaining a picture of the S.S. Scandinavian on which my mother was born in 1921. I framed that picture along with several other original documents concerning her arrival in Canada and presented these preserved documents to her for her 80th birthday. She was thrilled and these framed documents hung in my parent’s home until they past away. Mom past away in 2004 and Dad died in 2009. Mom’s name was Mollie Rhea Scandinavian Hamilton Gomberg and she was a British Citizen until she married my father, Hyman Siegel, in 1944. As you can tell from her name she was named for both the ship she was born on and the captain of the ship who’s surname was “Hamilton.” In 1944 when Mom married she officially changed her name and dropped the "Scandinavian." Her citizenship papers clearly indicate her dropping the Scandinavian, but there was no mention of the name Hamilton. Until recently when I found a record of her birth when she was only 5 days old, I thought the "Hamilton" in her name was just part of the "story" - not really part of her name. However, the document I found clearly reveals that Hamilton was part of her given name. The framed picture of the S.S. Scandinavian and the other cherished documents our family has celebrating Mom’s birth are now proudly displayed in my home and recently 2 great grandchildren have been added to our family tree. Unfortunately, Mom did not live long enough to meet her great grandchildren.

All that said, I wanted to try to obtain information on "Captain Hamilton." As I stated he was Captain of the S.S. Scandinavian that sailed from Antwerp to Quebec arriving in Quebec on or about September 23, 1921. Do you know where I can find more information about him and/or a picture? Thank you in advance for your help and for the picture of the S.S. Scandinavian you sent to me years ago.

The SS Scandinavian was sometime owned by the Allen LIne.

I found a record for her sister ship the RMS Pretorian also of Allen Line sailing from Glasgow to Quebec and Montreal in September 1912, commanded on this particular voyage by Captain Gavin Hamilton.

Might be the same captain ???

The first name of the Hamilton I was looking for began with a G so I think you're on target when you say that Captain Gavin Hamilton was the captain I was looking for. In googling Gavin Hamilton I found that there was a Gavin Hamilton who fought and was killed in the Falkland War in 1982. Certainly this is not the Captain Hamilton who commanded the S.S. Scandinavian, but perhaps was related. In any case, I'm going to try to contact the Allen Ship Lines or the Gjenvick-Gjenvik Archives to see if the have more information. Thank you so much for your response to my inquiry.
