I have run across this name again. It is, Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy, born in 1580. I found it in a tree in Geni.com. Going forward it ties into my family tree. Can anyone tell me what records would be in existance for Jørgen Holmøy?

Your "Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy" can be found in the online Family Tree website Geni.com. The site gives the following information.

Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy
Birth: circa 1600
Immediate Family:
Son of Harald Olufson Holmøy
Husband of Eufemia Olufsdtr. Holmøy
Father of Geble Jørgenson Bolstad and Brite Jørgensdatter
Added by: Jahn Harald Loen on July 7, 2011

Unlike many online Famly Trees this one has a source.

Jørgen første eier Erdal, Larsbruket nr. 3. Han eide i 1624 odg. Myklebust og Roti på Eid.

This is a book found in some libraries, mostly those in the midwest such as the University of Minnesota, Wilson Library as below.

There appear to be five volumes, and the U of M has three of them. So finding the reference to your guy maybe a chore.

Dave, you have asked earlier about this same family line, coming back and asking again is not likely to get you any new information. Why don't you revisit the older query first. When I look over your earlier query, I see that I looked up the family in the book listed above and posted what I found then.

Jørgen Haraldsen Erdal may have been a spitfire. In 1644 he was judged to pay a fine because he had beaten Knut Glm. in the head with a pot.

Dave your original question was about "what records are availabe for Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy, born in 1580" The short answer is not many. There are two usual sources of information about our ancestors from Norway. The parish, census, etc. records found on Digitalarkivet and often used on this site. Then there are the Bygdebok (farm histories) found in a few libraries. The issue with parish records is that they generally stop in the 1700's with an occasional parish going back to the late 1600's. The Bygdebok authors can and often use local histories and non-scanned records to go back a little further in time, sometimes into the 1500's.

For example in your search, one of the descendants of your Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy, born in 1580 is Jørgen Jørgensen Bolstad. His birth year is usually given as abt 1693. However this date is not from his baptism record but rather calculated from his death record since the scanned baptism records found in Digitalarkivet for Innvik parish where he was likely born begin with Innvik: 1750-1816, Ministerialbok. One can find his death record there in 1765, and note that he died at age 72.

see the tenth record down on the left hand page

And this record which was likely developed from the parish record.

If you want to go further back in time for this family with some feeling that you are getting fairly accurate informaton, you must use a Bygdebok. In this case the written by Jacob Aarland is the one that covers the farms occupied by this family.

We know from the parish records that Jørgen Jørgenson Bolstad was born about 1693 but that is about all. From the bygdebok that I looked at for your earlier post I found that is father is listed as Jørgen Gjeblesson Bolstad born abt 1656. Then his father is listed as Geble Jørgenson Bolstad no bith year given. That is where I stopped, however it is possible that the Bygdebok author went further to the person you asked about.Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy. That is likely since the Geni.com Family Tree references the Bygdebok for Jørgen Haraldson Erdal Holmøy.

So by using a combination of the scanned parish, census etc. records from Ditalarkivet and a Bygdbok for the area of interest you can with a good level of certainity go back to 1600 with this familly.

Depending on an Online Family Tree will sooner later cause you to have an incorrect Tree. However online family trees are not all bad. They can be used to give some direction to your hunt and help narrow down the places and dates you need to look at to find original or more reliable or confirming information. The better ones are the ones that provide sources that you can then access yourself.
