Hi everyone and happy new year.

I have been given limited info and am trying to find Olof Nelson born Dec 31 1871 in Norway and his parents are Nels Hendrikson and Ingleborg??. This info was listed on his UK naturalization papers. Place of birth was Rovedale, Langdale, Jursun. ( english spelling ).

At some stage Olof emigrated to UK and was married in 1907 to Alice Louise Meier (daughter of Olof Meier and Frances Holtby). Olof and Alice had 7 children in UK and on 1911 census he is missing only Alice and 1st child show. Have a UK death for him in 1922.

Thanks

Olof Nelson was from Rovedal in Lyngdal parish, map
His birth 31. Dec 1871 in Lyngdal church book
His parents in 1865 census.
The family is mentioned page 204 in the bygdebok (farm history book) Lyngdal I. It is possible to track ancestors back to 1600-1700, and to track living relatives.

Some of his ancestors came from Skrelia the most scenic spot in Lyngdal, where I have pictures from.

Yes, it is Ole in the church book.

Before 1900 the spelling of a name varied a lot. The man with the pen decided how to spell the name. I have seen a name spelled in nearly 10 different ways. Ole, the Danish way of spelling, was usually used in church books. Probably he was called "Ola" in daily speech. His name might be written Olav or Olaf by confirmation if the next pastor preferred more Norwegian style of spelling.

The weather is cold and fine! I hope you are not too hot!
Nine years ago we were in New Zealand, in a family reunion.

Hi

Thankyou, all records in UK show Olof so it has been hard to trace him in Norway. I live on the east coast side of New Zealand and we enjoy very hot summers with the last 10 days running at 35/36 degrees. I hope you enjoyed your New Zealand trip. I visited Norway in 2009 and found it to be like New Zealand in places but far more breathtaking countyside and fjords.

Olof or Oluf is a more Swedish style of spelling. But it is still the same name, the same person. And Nils = Niels = Nels ( English).

The parents of Olof Nelson (= Ole Nilsen) are listed as Nils Henriksen and Ingebor Tobiasdatter in the 1865 census - Niels Hendriksen and Ingeborg Tollisdatter were married Nov 21 1858, see #12.

Nils Henriksen, born 1829 on Langøy in Spind parish: Spind church book A 2, page 37
The father was Henrik Matias Sakariassen from Stoutland (4) in 1801 census

The surname Tobiasdatter in 1865 census is a mistake. Ingeborg was a Tollisdatter.

Hi,

I have just joined the forum in an attempt to trace the roots of my grandfather, Olof Nelson and my great-grandfather, Olof Meier. I was intrigued to see that there exist posts for Olof Nelson. His wife, Alice Meier, was my grandmother (d1969) and I remember her well. Are you and I therefore related, Shirley? I live in London but come originally from Hull (Sculcoates) where Olof and alice were married and where their children were born.My mother (d 2001) was the last child alongside her twin sister Inge (b 1920). My grandmother was widowed with seven children aged only 37 in 1922 when my grandfather died and she had a very hard life indeed.

I would love to hear from anyone to whom I am related!

Best wishes,

Sandra

Yes, thank you, I have this. The problem is tracking him to Moss, I have been unsuccessful so far but now that I have discovered this site I am hopeful!
