I'm researching my dad's family from Lillesands. I've found his grandfather Ole Jacob Rosenvold (age 10) and family in the 1865 census for Vestre/Moland. On other sites, I've found records indicating he emigrated and settled in Brooklyn in 1881. But I can find nothing about how he got there. I also have a copy of a "Sofartsbog" with 9th Mars 1856....is this date of birth? christening? Any guidance/assistance would be great. I'd love to find out more about Ole J's parents too. Also, I'm thinking about traveling to Norway in June. Will I be able to do any/much research in Lillesands and Grimstad?
Thanks for any help!

Looks like Ole Jakob left Norway from the port of Kristiansand, Vest-Agder on or about 30 Apr 1881.

The Norwegian parish records are available for research online and there are many various databases that can be used before you travel.

Wonder what's going on with this search...

In the Old Fulton newspaper site there is an obituary of a Rosenvold who died in 1959. He came from Grimstad, was a carpenter and was survived by a wife Olga and a daughter named Ruth and a brother still in Norway named Jens.

Birth Location Other: grsnistad

This is probably his baptism record. See number 53.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=983&idx_id=983&uid=ny&idx_side=-93

I have not seen any relationship between this famiy and that of the OP's however I notice that in the 1865 Census a Jens Rosenvold born in 1817 was born in Stævern. Same as Stavern?

Probably this family n the 1865 Census.

Well Jackie you may have hit upon a family connection here. In the Ancestry.com Family Tree the father of Ole Schjederup Rosenvold born 1814 in Stavern, Vestfold, his father is listed as Vilhelm Olsen Rosenvold. In this tree Vilhelm is married to Maren Dorthea Jensdatter Berug and they have four children Ingerine, Ole, Inger and Marthinus. No Jens.

In this Family Tree from Geni.com there is a Vilhelm Rosenvold, no wife and one son Jens Kristian Rosenvold born 1817 in Stavern, Larvik, Vestfold. The links provided lead to an 1875 Census for same Jens as my link to the 1865 Census above.

http://www.geni.com/people/Jens-Kristian-Rosenvold/6000000033950293642?through=6000000033951308547

Hard to imagine that there is not some connecton between these families.

Well while I was researching Einar stepped in and proved the relationship. Einar would you check your link for Dec 4, I did not go where I think you want us to go. Went to Vestre Moland 1826

Still looking for how Ole Jacob Rosenwald travelled to America. Here he is listed as arriving in Oct of 1881. That is quite a few months from the departure found by Hopkins above. However there are no other candidates from the emmigration records for Krisitansund that fit better.

in the New York, Index to Petitions for Naturalization filed in New York City, 1792-1989
Name: Ole J Rosenwald
Naturalization Date: 26 Oct 1892
Former Nationality: Norwegian
Arrival Date: Oct 1881
Title and Location of Court: Common Pleas Court, New York County
Volume: 729
Record Number: 85

Close but not a cigar yet. The Johan who died in NY in 1959 was aged 69. So here is who I think he is:

Yes, I guess I did not make the connection clear. Father of Johan and Jens was Reinert Rosenvald b 1848 and his father was Jens Kristian Rosenvald b 1817 and his father was Vilhelm Rosenvald who also had a son Ole Schjelderup Rosenvald b 1814 who had a son Ole Jacob Rosenvald b 1856 who is the OP's great grandfather.

According to the Ancestry Family Tree Ole Schjelderup Rosenvald had at least ten children born from 1842 to 1865, inclucing Ole Jacob born 1856.
