Here is a passage from a paragraph where the bygdebok author is explaining that frequency of criminal convictions decreased thru the 1700s, in our rural area, because of - he says - efficient law enforcement, leading to better behavior.

To understand the context I add the first sentence of the paragraph.

It's clear that such (criminal) cases are decreasing during the 1700s. (...) "Some [cases] were still there, right up to our time. It's not so easy to get rid of the old Adam."

"Old Adam" is an expression of man's sinful nature. The term derives from older German Bible translations of Paul's letter to the Colossians.

Thanks very much. I was not aware that you had access to this bygdebok publication. I know nothing of the author, but judging from his name his family was probably from this rural community.
