Many Laps were blond hair blue variety- the only thing that seperated them from the rest of the general population was their livehood - reindeer herders - one line of my ancestry goes back to early 1600's as a Birkarlar (keeper of the Laps)

I have had some responses to questions about my family name (Sabey) that it may have Sami origins. I am really interested to find out. The other spellings that I have for the Americanized Sabey, some from Norwegian records are Saebye, Saebo, Saeboe.
If anyone has some information linking any of these names to Sami, I would be interested. My Sabey family came to the U.S.A. from Bergen in about 1864.
Thank you for any help you can provide,

Birkarlar in Swedish, Pirkkalaiset in Finnish, was a group of Finnish and Swedish traderes and trappers who for approximately 300 years explored, colonized and governed the forest area between Bottenviken and the northern interland of Norway.
