Hi,
From the Grand Forks Herald, Tuesday morning, 7 May 1912, page 8, col 3:
"Admitted She Had Been Wedded" Peculiar Situation Created in Ramsey County Divorce Case Heard Yesterday by Templeton. Because she admitted while on the witness stand in the district court of Ramsey county yesterday that she had been married in Norway in 1880 to one Bert Evanson, and had never been divorced from him as late as 1901, Judge Templeton held that there was no grounds for a divorce action in the case of Charles Garske vs. Ellen Garske, well known residents of the county who have been prominently in the limelight on previous occasions because of their differences.
The situation created is peculiar. Either Mr or Mr. (sic) Garske have been illegally wed, and though they have a large family of children, either of them is free to wed again. Their children, however, are legal heirs of both.
Several years ago an action for divorce was started by Mr. Garske, but it was dropped when Mrs. Garske appeared on the scene and they reached an agreement, living together for two years, after which [t]hey quarreled and parted again. In this suit, he alleged desertion, and she charged cruel and inhuman treatment in a cross bill.
The divorce suit heard by Judge Templeton yesterday, was merely a continuance of the old suit. The action is peculiarly important because of property possessions, he being worth about $40,000, while she has property valued at about $12,000 in her own name.
Judge Templeton returned home last evening."
Since she was free to marry, she must either have divorced her first husband legally or he died in the interim.
Her homestead packet should contain her declaration of intention to become a citizen (and thus be eligible for a homestead). In that era, not a lot of information is asked on the declaration but most usually which government or sovereign the person is giving up and the date of their arrival in which U.S. port.

Mrs. Garske of City Succumbs Death early today ends lingering illness of early resident Mrs. Ellen Olson Garske, 65, resident of the Lake Region since 1882, died at a local hospital at 6:15 o'clock this morning of a lingering illness. Ailing for many years, her health had failed noticeably during the past three months. She had gone to various cities throughout the Northwest during the past year seeking relief, and had returned to the city only recently. She entered a local hospital on Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the St. Olaf Lutheran church of the city by Rev. George O. Lofness, pastor. A resident of the Lake Region since 1882, Mrs. Garske lived on a homestead in Webster township from the time of their marriage in 1884 until 16 years ago, when she moved to this city, residing at 722 second avenue. She was born in Christiansand, Norway, and came to the United States in 1881. During her first year in this country she resided at Fisher's Landing, Minn. Surviving are her husband, Charles, of Wausau, Wis. who is ill and will be unable to come for the funeral; four sons, Otto, Charles, William and Henry, and two daughters, Mrs. Theordore Overbo and Mrs. Sam. E. Erickstad, all of the Lake Region. Another son, Oscar, died when a baby about 26 years ago. -- submitted by Lawrence Garske, paper and page not identified
*********************************** However, when Ellen died, Charles had remarried; his second wife died before she: ***********************************
First, is a paragraph excerpted from "Garske News Notes", by a "regular correspondent of the Times", printed April 15, 1921: "Mr. and Mrs. Charles Garske Sr. returned Friday morning from Rochester, Minnesota, where Mrs. Garske has been receiving medical aid for the past five weeks." Second: Also from the Starkweather Times in 1921, (no date recorded), headlined, "Mrs. Chas. Garske, Sr. Died Friday Evening." : "Mrs. Chas. Garske Sr., of Garske, N. Dak., died at the General Hospital at Devils Lake at ten-thirty Friday evening. She had been ill for the past two years, never having completely recovered from an attack of Influenza. Mrs. Garske has been a resident of Garske for the past ten years. She was endowed with the excellent qualities that make for a wide acquaintance and lasting friendship. She leaves a husband and two children to mourn her loss. Chas. Garske Sr., of Garske, Mrs. Geo. B. Leighton of Spokane, Wash., and Harold E. Homrig of Wausau, Wis. The body was shipped Saturday evening on No. 30 to Wausau, Wis., where the funeral was held on Tuesday of this week. This community extends the deepest sympathy to her husband and children. The happy memories she has left behind will do much to soften the grief felt for the loss of so devoted a wife and mother." Third: Also from a subsequent "Garske News Notes", (no date) I'm excerpting a paragraph which states: "Mr. and Mrs. Herman Garske, Sr., accompanied Chas. Garske, Sr., and Mrs. Geo. B. Leighton to Wausau, Wis., where they will attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Chas. Garske, Sr."

Hi,
Fisher's Landing is in Polk County, Minnesota. I believe there was an Ellen Olson filing naturalization papers in Polk county as seen at the Iron Range Interpretive website, but no dates are given. In addition there was an "Ellen Colson" who filed her first papers in Grand Forks county in 1881 found in the online database. Either could be her but try getting the homestead packet first.

Just wondering, what information you have that says she was born 1862 in Christiansand? It might make it easier to find records, if we have as much info as possible. :-)
I have a copy of her death certificate. She died and was buried in the town where I was born, in North Dakota. I'm looking for her ancestors, and siblings, if any, in Norway. We never heard about her life, but I do have that photograph that looks like it was taken in Norway.
************************************* I got a copy of an intent to apply for citizenship, in about 1881. That document states that Ellen Olsen was born on or about 1861 and emigrated to the port of Quebec, in May (year not listed on the document, but I suspect about 1880).
I would like to know if her 'husband', Mr. Evenson, was on that same ship or not. Sincerely, Edith |

Here is a candidate for you. Although the transcriber writes her name as Eli, a look at the orginal manifest would lead one to write the name as Oli or perhaps in its Norwegian form Øli. The month of arrival in Quebec is correct and the birth year is very close to 1858. It would be very nice to find her Norwegian emigration record to confirm this.
Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 Name: Eli Olsdatter Gender: Female Age: 23 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859 Date of Arrival: 16 May 1882 Vessel: Circassian Search Ship Database: View the 'Circassian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec Port of Departure: Liverpool, England; Londonderry, Ireland; Queenstown, Ireland

I'm afraid that is too late. Her application for citizenship on Polk county, Minnesota, was June of 1881. That application does state that she arrived in Quebec, and that the month was May, though, sadly, no year is given. I'm thinking it was 1880, because my uncle's obituary says that she lived for a year at Fisher's Landing (which is in Polk County) for a year before moving to Dakota Territory, where she homesteaded. ******** Edith *********

Hi,
So you have determined that the Ellen Olson in the Polk County, Minnesota declaration is yours. Did you get the actual records of the Ellen Colson in Grand Forks County and what about that record made you reject that Ellen?

I am pursuing the Minnesota Ellen, because the data I have availabe match. I don't have the Grand Forks item yet.
I do have the homestead material, which sheds some light on the marriage, but not on the immigration, Sincerely, Edith

Yes, - I made a .pdf file from it, if you are interested.
She first applied in 1884, before she was married. She received the homestead after she was married to Charles Garske. Sincerely, Edith

It is only a few Skjeggedal farms in Norway (possibly 8). It would be nice if you can tell what time the Photo was taken, also could Kuntsdtr. be Knutsdtr? and how many letters are there after the O in the given name? A scanned text may also give a possibility to read it.
The unknown word appears to be Gure or Guro. The original is handwritten, so appears to be a woman's name or signature. Guro Knudsdtr Skj[e]ggedal.
There does appear that there is a woman roughly contemporary to Ellen in Tovdal named Guro Knutsdatter living on Skjeggedal, #15 baptism Guro and her parents Ole Knudson and Guro Knutsdatter b 1853 on ___ Skjeggedal.

Also wondering about the significance of the year 1901 (mentioned in the abortive divorce proceedings in the newspaper article) brought me to this, the death record of Ole Ahreson Skjæggedal:

Ole and 14 others bearing Skjeggedal for name are found in the Tovdal cemetery in DIS gravminner.
