A new member, I am looking for help please tracing my Norwegian ancestors. Sigvart Gabrielsen married my grandmother Agnes Arnesen in Cardiff in 1926, and they subsequently lived in Newport, S Wales where both died. His marriage certificate states age as 56, hence born 1870. I traced Sigvart's name in Norwegian State Archives. The Stavanger Parish Register gives a record with date of birth 30 May 1874, baptised 21 June 1874. The "Sjomansruller" for Stavanger also gives Sigvart with this date of birth and enlisted on 11 March 1892 (roll no 6845) with voyages in 1892 (Globus), 1893 (Jerusalem) and 1894 (Agathe) including calls in port of Cardiff, which fits well. (Sjomasruller also gives an Alexander Gabrielsen roll no 5583 who could be his brother).
"FamilySearch" yields five siblings including Alexander and father Gabriel Gundersen born 1818 (or named as Gabriel Hadland in at least one record), and mother Anne Olene Tollaksdr. born 1830. I cannot locate them or any of Sigvart's siblings in any census or other records.
I would appreciate help tracing Gabriel and Anne, and his siblings; any living descendants; and history of the vessels he sailed in.
Thanks in anticipation

There is a Family Tree that can be accessed if you have a subscription to Ancestry.com that appears to be this family. It lists a Sigvart Hadland born May 30, 1874. Son of Gabriel Gundeson Hadland (1820-1896) and Ane Olene Tollaksdatter Ree (1838- ). Ane appears to be his second wife and the children are listed as Gunvald, Severine, Alexander, and Sigvart. The tree goes back a few generations and belongs to this person

LInda, Peder, Kare,
Thanks so much for your prompt replies - very helpful, and I have already used this to update my tree. A few additional points please :
1. I am still learning about use of Norwegian partonymics and naming practices. Why would Sigvart's father Gabriel refer to himself variously as Gabriel Hadland and Gabriel Gunderson ?? 2. Good details provided for Gabrial's male line - I can research rhse further now. Any details for Anne Olene please 3. Suggestions please for any sites where I could research the vessels Sigvart sailed on 4. Linda, any clues for an e-mail address for Klepp62 ?? I checked out the memebrship list for Norwegian Heritage - not a user name listed. 5. Linda, I guess Thomas Vehus will have only researched Gabriel's first marriage, but I'll contact him anyway on the chance he may have looked at his second marriage to and know of living descendants.
Regards

1) Hi, in 1865 there were three Hadland farms in Lye, a former parish ended 1927 when it bacame a sub parish under Time municipality. People often used farmnames as last names, a person who lived on several farm changed name many times or a combination; Gabriel Hadland Gabriel Gundersen Gabriel Gundersen Hadland.
Gabriel must have lived on Hadland once or been close connected to the farm.

On Ancestry.com there are six family trees for Gabriel Gunderson Hadland. Some with more information than others. Two of the trees carry the family line back many, many generations back to Anund Geirmundson Bjerkreim born 1475 Bjerkrheim, Rogaland. Now going back that far in time is problamatic at best and I cannot vouch for the accuracy of a family line going back that far in time. But it might be worth your while to find some way to access Ancestry.com to utilize the information available there.
I will send an e-mail through my Ancestry.com account to klepp62 who seems to have the most relevant current family information and ask him to access Norwayheritage.com to look at your posts and see if he will contribute something to your search. |

Photo of Bark Jerusalem. The vessel dissappeared 1895.
Bark Globus
The name Bark comes of the rig of the sail on the rear mast. Kċre |

[Kare, thanks for this and your subsequent post. I'll write to Norwegian Maritime Muuseum to see if they have records of voyages for these vessels.
I looked again at the Stavanger seamans roll entries for Sigvart (No 6845) and his brother Alexander (No 5583).. Under "remarks", Sigvart's entry states "Octbr 83, roemt i mobile" and Alexander's "Afm. 81 Suruabaya". Have you any idea what these entries could mean please ??
