Searching for parents of elias gotaas who came to Australia in early 1850's. Because of the surname I have been concentrating on the area of Skogn and Alstahaug where the Gotaas farm was located. I am unable to find him under the surname of Gotaas .

When was he born? 17 Dec 1829?

Have you found a passenger list or something, for the emigration? Looking at the other names on that list, could give an indication about where he came from.

Before 1865 the next Norwegian census available is 1801. What resources have you been looking in?
You have a birthyear for him? Names of ANY other family members?

Gotaas would NOT have been his Norwegian "surname" -- that would be his address, a possible identifier that he MIGHT be called while he lived on that farm. If he chose to use Gotaas as his name after he emigrated that does probably indicate some family connection with a location called Gotaas (or something very similar).

Elias Gotaas according to the family bible was born on 16th December 1834 although when he arrived in Australia in November 1859 his age was listed as 29 years which would mean he was born 1829. He deserted from a ship named the " Thames " which sailed from London earlier in 1859.

Lars Erichsen Gottaasvald and Ane Marthe Tronsdatter had a son Elisæus (Elias) born Nov 11 1828, see #3
this is as close to 1829 as you will get.
His parents are still at "Gotaas" in 1865, see here
It was Elias mother Anna Martha born Dec 12 1802 who came from Gotaas, see #5 from the top on left hand page here
Her parents were Thron Olsen and Hannica Endresdatter.
Lars and Anne Martha were married Oct 4 1827, see #26
Lars was born March 24 1799, his parents were Erik Larsen, Hynne and Jonetta Olsdatter.
See top of left hand page here

It looks like he went to Nedre Størdalen in 1855 as Olaus Larsen Gotaasvald age 30 #7

Stjørdal is in the southern part of Nord Trøndelag county, Skogn and Alstadhaug will be seen north of Størdal click here

Elias Larsen Gotaas had also a sister born June 6 1844, her name was Baroline.
The first Baroline they had was born Jan 27 1841.
Their daughter Ana Margrethe was born April 27 1838.

I dont think you got the right one.
You can actually get closer to 1829 than Nov 11 1828...

I think your Elias [Olsen] Gotaas is born 17 Dec 1829, listed as #15 here.
Whether you can get closer to 16th December 1829 than 17 Dec 1829, I don't know, atleast not with the name of Elias Gotaas...

His father Ole (Gotaas) b. 1807 was an enlisted soldier (Gevorben soldat) at Major Stabells Compagnie.
His mother Marie Elisabeth Løvvigen b. 1799 died in childbed, the same day Elias was born.

In 1852, Elias were on Støtt farm in Meløy, Nordland, where he got a son named Anton Olaus Petter Eliassen b. 14. Sep 1852. Mother Ane Marie Pedersdatter b. 1829 was from Sandvik in Meløy, Nordland.

After that, there is no more traces of Elias in Norway.

Amazing Jan Peter, I agree with you and ask that all I have posted so far be deleted.
How you were able to find the person in your first posting I don't understand, and can it be proven that Elias Olsen = Elias Gotaas?
Elias Olsens mother Marie Elisabeth Løvvigen died Jan 22, i.e. 5 days after Elias was born, see #8
The fact that Elias Gotaas Olsen, Støt had an "uægte" son with Ane Marie Pedersdatter at Meløy is on record.
There is however an interesting question: who was "handelsmand Gotaas, Støt" who baptized a daughter Bolethe Catrine the same day that Elias son was baptized? See #58
On Aug 9 1849 Elias Olsen Gotaas moved out to Bjørnøen, see #78
Elias Gotass son Anton Olaus was confirmed in 1868, see #8
In 1865, Ane Pedersdatter, the mother of Elias Gotaas son lives at the Sandvig farm with her son, see here

That would probably be Handelsmann (trader) Bonsak Gotaas, born in Trondheim about 1803. Possibly an uncle?

Bonsak married Christina Boletta Sverdrup on 11 OCT 1828 in Folda, Nordland.

Bonsach
Born: 16 JUN 1804
Christening: 15 JUL 1804, Frosta, Nord Trøndelag
Parents: Andreas Boutolphsen Gotaas & Weincke Maria Kode (Thode ?)

Interesting to see the other names listed at Bonsach's christening:
Maren Seijanna Lund from Trondheim
Giertrud Hojem from Skogn, Nord Trøndelag
Marit Olsdatter Levanger
Ole Levanger
Peter Tuff from Skogn, Nord Trøndelag
Søren Butoelphsen Gotaas

Census-1801

Anders Buttulsen Gotaas was from the Gotås farm in Skogn, Nord Trøndelag
(ref O. M Skaanes: 'Frolslekten Gran', Volume 1 (Verdal 1967), page 149-150)

I was hoping to find that Bonsach had a brother named Ole, born about 1803...?

Several Ole were born in Alstadhaug i Skogn in 1803, but the one born March 25 had a mother Anna Olsdatter, Gotaas who was engaged at Svendgaard. Father was Benjamin Pedersen.
See here
Could he be Ole Gotaas, Elias father?

That is a possibility.
Looks like Benjamin Pederssen is enlisted (as quartermester?) at Stordals Compagnie (Stjørdal)?
Ole Gotaas was also a soldier when Elias was born in 1829.

Benjamin Pederssen (18) is a servant at Wold farm in Skogn, census-1801.

Ole was christened Maundy Thursday, 1803.

Could this be the mother?

Yes, that is the same "girl" and Ole Olsen head of the household was one of the godfathers.
Benjamin was baptized 2. Sunday in Advent, see here
his father was Peder Hojem.
The godparents Peder and Johannes are Benjamins brothers then.
Benjamins mother (and the brother Peder) is here
