I have been searching around for a while now and cannot find any definitive answer. Does anyone know if there were traditions or practices that parents would follow when naming their child's sponsors? Are the sponsors relatives? Friends? Neighbors?

I do not think you will find a definitive answer, it all depended on the circumstances and possibilities, just like to-day.

The sponsors were people from their "social circle", ie. friends, neighbors, uncles, aunts, siblings, grandparents..
