Hi, I am new here. I am finding it very hard to research norwegian names so I have to ask for help. I am looking for the names of my great grandfathers parents. Family history states that he is the second cousin of Professor Carl A. Mellby, born Jan 5 1869 in Oslo Norway. This means that one of his parents is a first cousin of Reverand Ole Andersen Mellby, born Jan 9 1843 in Feiring, Akershus or a cousin of his wife. Ole Mellby's wife is Sigrid Marie Engebretsdatter, born feb 18 1839.

Look for a man or a very pregnant woman or a couple -- names and ages unknown -- leaving from Norwegian port unknown ??? Seriously?

From the US side what did you learn from baby Albert's arrival at an American port? Who was he travelling with when the ship docked? You say his mother died eleven weeks later -- What was her name, how old were they or was she, and were there any additional notes included for them about place of origin, companions who might be able to be tracked, etc?

Hi,

Ole Andersen Mellby was born 9 Jan 1843 to parents named Anders M. and Karen O.(Brodshoug) as you have already stated in Feiring, Øvre Romerike, Norway. O.A.M. attended Gjertsens latinskole, then 1862-1865 Kristiania university (A.B., A.M., C.T.) then came to the US. in 1872 and was a pastor at New Richland, Minnesota (and other places) from 1872-1914. He married Sigrid M. Grundt in 1867 and she died in 1908. This is from Norske Lutherske Prester i Amerika 1843-1915 by O.M. Norlie page 137.

By the numbers, found in the Oslo emigrantprotokoller database at Digitalarkivet which begins in 1867 but continues to 1930):

24 people left in 1867
57 people left as residents of Feiring (none in 1867)
21 people left as residents of Akershus (none in 1867)
596 people left as residents of Romerike / Romeriket (none in 1867)

Those from 1867 were leaving much later in the season than April or May 1867.

Good Luck,

Jackie M.

Hi,

Here is the web address for a family database at rootsweb concerning the Mellby family. You might find more of the sibling's names there:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=szemke&id=I2033

Good Luck,

Jackie M.

I am C.A. Mellby's grandson. I have a small family history my father wrote in college,
only a couple of pages, but I'll check and see if there is anything in that.
You can get to me directly at jmellby@gmail.com
