I also found Knud Ulvog in 1910 Census under the terribly mispelled name of Knud Meag. Looking at the orginal it is clearly Knud Ulvog. He is on page two of the Census record for Richland, Union County, South Dakota whereas his friend Paul Strand is on page 9 of the same Census record.

Mary, I guess what we are saying here is that your Paul came to the United States under the name of Paul Kristensen. And very shortly after arrival changed his name to Paul Strand. Or to Paul K (for Kristensen ?) Strand.

A question for you would be, did Paul Strand have a friend with the name Knud Ulvog or Ulvaag.

You don't actually need to verify whether or not your grandfather had a friend named Knud Ulvaag. That was 100 years ago, so it could be quite hard to verify.
But if you can confirm that the below (in blue) is your Paul Strand, then we know that your Paul Strand arrived New York on The Lusitania as Paul Kristiansen (19) on Oct 11, 1907.

Name: Paul Strand
Born: 01 Feb 1888
Died: Sep 1981
SSN: 503-07-6722
Last residence: 57025, Elk Point, Union, SD.

Yes, Grandpa had a friend by that name. You have helped us tremendously. Thank you and thank you Jan Peter for your help. Our family is very excited by this information.
