Anders emigrated about 1853, so he can not be in the 1865-census for Norway.

He is born Nov 1837 according to 1900-census, possibly near Trondheim.

Their first daughter was named Betsey, and if it's him in Census-1860 for Windsor, Dane, Wisconsin, his mother could also be named Betsey. Possibly Brithe/Birtha in Norway?
The Olsen name could his fathers patronymic, thus he won't be named Olsen in Norwegian records.

Hi,

Another possible original Norwegian name which was transformed to Betsy is Birgit.

Andrew's first two children are named Bessie / Bertha and Olaus / Oliver. His wife's last name is recorded in a few places as Mathisen. If he followed that naming custom there should also be a Matthew or Mathias or Mats in the bunch as well.

I'd suggest spending $5 for the North Dakota death certificate. It may name his parents and his birth place and give a more exact birth date, and will tell where he was buried (or disposition of body) which might lead to the correct church affiliation or the name of a funeral home--which would be other places to get records, too.

There may be records on his place of origin in the sources cited in the Dodge Olmsted page--the pastor's records of East and West St. Olaf church. And because otherwise, how would it have been known to put on the page?

An obituary for him might also be looked for. I have access to the Rowberg Biographical File and will look for it. There are very few people sporting the last name Moe in the headstone transcription I have for East St. Olaf and Zion churches, but will check.

A wildshot for his wife:
Mathea Mathiasdatter 9 f Farmers - Steerage - brig Incognito, dep Christiania July 6 1852, arrival New York Sep. 12.
She is possibly too old, Andrew's wife looks to be born about 1847.

A lot of the passengers on this brig came to"Oleana", the settlement created by Ole Bull in Potter County, Pennsylvania.
But the soil there was not tillable, and many of the settlers continued to Wisconsin.

Audrey Amundson is related to this Mathea Mathiasdatter.

Valdres (dialect Vallers) is a region in Oppland county.

In 1865, Valdres is covered by Nord-Aurdal, Sør-Aurdal, Øystre Slidre, Vestre Slidre and Vang.
Etnedal is also in Valdres, but is covered by Nord-Aurdal and Sør-Aurdal in 1865.

Andrew O. Moe was at the Ford's Theater in downtown Washington and was an eyewitness to the killing of President Abraham Lincoln on the night of April 14th, 1865.
