I am sorry if I posted in the wrong place. I am writing to this forum because i could really use some help. Either I could use help in finding or navigating around. I am looking for information about my great, great, grandfather’s migration to the US. Here is what I know or am told. According to US census he migrated here in 1862 from Norway, He was born in about 1849, and his name here was Tollef T. Thompson. He Was in Wisconsin and then Minnesota. I have no Idea where he was born other than Norway. I also could use help location His second wife. She was born in Sweden, migrated here in abt 1900, and best I can tell her name is Emma s. and married Thompson. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you all. John

Thanks for everything, Johnboyy

OK, one more thang might help, I know kids names in Norway were also ancestor names as well, not sure if he did the same, but maybe they will help. But first I assume it or they were mistakes with the census people, but he was also listed as tally, Tollef, Tolef, and Tolley, his kids names were:
Andrew Thompson
Seibert or sever Thompson
Anna or annie Thompson
George Thompson
Lena Thompson
Decker Thompson
Thomas Thompson
Again, Thank you

Thanks for everything, Johnboyy

Born about 1849 and emigrating in 1862, he would have been only 13 years old. Seems a little young for traveling alone.

In order to help some more investigation in the US would be beneficial.

His name in Norway would most likely be Tollef or Tolli and his father most likely Thomas.

Could Tollef T. Thomson be the same person as Tollef Thomasen Tollefsen?

An Tollef Thomasen was born in Lærdal of farm Afdal Nov. 24. 1847, bap. Dec. 5.
Parents; Thomas Tollefsen and Guri Olsdatter, see #181

Can´t find this family in the 1865 census for Lærdal

Hi,

Here is Tally's family in 1880 census Hennepin County, Minnesota:

Name: Tolley T. Thompson
Residence: Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota
Birthdate: 1860
Birthplace: Norway
Relationship to Head: Self
Spouse's Name: Emma S. Thompson
Spouse's Birthplace: Norway
Father's Name:
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Name:
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Race or Color (Expanded): White
Ethnicity (Standardized): American
Gender: Male
Martial Status: Married
Age (Expanded): 20 years
Occupation: Tends Brick Mason
NARA Film Number: T9-0622
Page: 228
Page Character: B
Entry Number: 3471
Film number: 1254622
Household Gender Age
Tolley T. Thompson M 20
Spouse Emma S. Thompson F 27
Child Andrew Thompson M 4
Child Seibert Thompson M 1

Interesting that wife #1 and wife #2 both named Emma. Wife #1 born Norway, wife #2 born Sweden. No picture of page at www.familysearch.org but might be worth a look to see if Tolley's age is 20 or something else.

Yes his age is a misinterpretation of a malformed 28 instead of 20.

Here is a link to the likeliest family in the 1885 Minnesota state census to be Tally's. Interesting that his name is carried as Thomas:

Hi,

There were at least 2 Tollef Thompsons in Minneapolis in 1890. Here is a listing of a property transaction for a Tollef T. Thompson at Chronicling America web site:

I think this the family in 1865.:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=62&filnamn=f61424&gardpostnr=221&personpostnr=1484&merk=1484#ovre

They would have been in Lærdal in 1865 if Årdal hadn't been seperated out in 1863.

Altogether I see 35 Tollef (many spellings) b 1852, numerous fylke and parishes. Of these there are 4 whose father's first name (and their patronymic) begins with T but quite a few more whose father's patronymic name (and not necessarily their first name) starts with a T.

Tollef Tobiasson b. Haa living on Røderullen father's name Tobias Gabrielson

#16

Tollef Tollefson b. Fjelberg Hordaland living on Vestereide
father's name Tørris Tollefson

Tollef Torbjornson b. Fjelberg Hordaland living lægslem on Østereide

and the Tollef formerly from Lærdal, confirmed in Årdal #15.

First allow me to think everyone for the help you have provided, I am not sure what help you want or need, let me know what you need and I will do all I can. I was hoping finding his migrit information would be the big break I need in tracing this family branch.I honestly know the same as you, I have read and peiced as much as I could from the census, although 1890 census in minnesota were destroyed, I have peiced as much as I could, I too have the same discepencies, two different abt birth years, (1849-1850) and 1852, and two different migrent years, 1870 and 1862. and best I can tell both wife with the same name, different middle names and different birth places. although I had not found any marrage records, birth records, or even death records for any member, I am looking for relatives in minnesota who might be able to help. to everyone I thank you very much, for your help and the links to info I had not found. I am working, only thing else I can add is he lived and owned land on the north east corner of decker lake, itasca county, third river township, minnesota. I have looked for anyone living in the area and so far have found nothing. I know in the 1950's my grandfathers mother was still living on the farm, but sence then I have no connection or idea. again thank you

Thanks for everything, Johnboyy
