Searching in the 1865 Norwegian census for people born Østerdalen, found quite a lot of them included other descriptors with that name:

Aanæs
Aamot
Grue
Hofs/ Hoffs/
Elverum
Qvigne
Rendalen / Renesdalen
Solør
Storelvdalen
Tolgen
Tonsæt / Tonseth
Troldalen
Trysil
Vaale

Since the search has been made in Hof, Aasnes, Valle, with not quite overwhelming success, perhaps the search parish base needs expanding?

I received this confirmation record of Johanna Iversdr. from arlysheddan today. The confirmation record is from Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart, Minnesota. I believe her birthplace reads Søler, which must be Solør, Hedmark.

See #1, 1873, towards the bottom of the page.

Solør is a region that covers a wider area of Hedmark, most of it are located in todays Grue, Åsnes and Våler. But parts of it can be found in Brandval, Vinger and Eidskog.

I still have not found the connection - marriage of Iver Iverson and Bertha Marie Andersdtr or their daughter's birth record in Norway. It may not be possible to find.
This confirmation record of Johanna Iversdtr, their daughter, may indicate where in Norway she was born. The word after Johanna Iversdtr in the record may be the name of a farm or community in Solar, Norway?
Maybe a bygdebok of Hof would be a place to look or a different bygdebok? Where would the farm Knappen or Glorvigan be?
Thank you for any help or info. Arlys Heddan

Glorvigan = Glorviken is in Gjesaasen, Aasnes, Hedemarken.
Knappen could be 3 places, Aasnes is one of them and Vaaler, Vaaler, Hedemarken could be another.

As said, I believe her birthplace reads Søler, which must be Solør in Hedmark.

From Wikipedia: Hof is located in the countryside Solør in Hedmark, and consists of the three current parish Hof, Hof Finnskog and Arneberg. Hof is bordering Grue in the south, Åsnes in the north, Våler, Nord-Odal and Stange in west and Sweden to the east.
Hof was formerly an independent municipality in Hedmark County, created in 1837. Hof municipality then included an area larger than what is today described as Hof. Hof municipality consisted since 1837 of what today is Våler, Åsnes municipality and parts of Grue.

Quite complicated. But I think the answer to this mystery could be found in Åsnes or Våler, Hedmark
There is Knappen farm both in Åsnes and Våler.

Here is the father to Iver Iversen born 11. May 1823 in census-1865 on farm Mejningen in Åsnes.
He is a widower, and lives with his children Helene Iversdatter (37) and Jon Iversen (29) plus two grandchildren.

Interesting that one of the granddaughters is named Johanne.

I believe Iver Iversen must be from the red circle in the map below.

Within this circle you have:
Gardsknappen (ie "Knappen")
Glorvika (ie. "Glorvigen" )
Mejningen where Iver Iversen b. 1794 resided in 1865 is also there. When Iver's daughter Helene is born in 1828, the residence is named Smørnølshaugen.
Mejningen and Smørnølshaugen could be the same place, both are located under main farm Smørbøl, which is also in this area.

I think the reason this search has been unsolved for so many years, is due to missing churchrecords. The oldest church records for Åsnes parish was lost when the parsonage burned in 1929.
I believe the christening of Johanne Iversdatter took place in Åsnes church, but the record is lost.

In 1848, Hof parish was divided in two; Hof and Åsnes. Thus; Åsnes records from before 1848 can be found in the churchbooks from Hof. After 1848, Åsnes had its own chuchbook, and those early books from 1848 and onwards was lost in the fire.

I would tend to agree with Jan Peter. Last evening with not much on TV I paged through the marriage records for Hof, Hedmark from 1841 to 1866. I did not find a marriage record for a Berthe Marie Andersdatter to either Iver Iversen or to any other man. Certainly I could have missed it, but more likely her marriage was not recorded in the Hof church books.

Looking at the Bygdebøker for either Åsnes, or Solor might be a very good way to proceed. You an access them either through the Family History Libraries in your area, or visiting one of the local Universities with a good Bygdebok collection. Or if that is not workable you can contact the Assistant Archivist Michael Swanson at the University of North Dakota. Here is his email address.

michael.swanson@library.UND.edu.

He will need to know as much info from you so he can do a good search. There is a small charge for the search and to get email scans of the Bygdebok pages but I have always found it to be reasonable.

Åsnesboka, v. 1 1953 DL596.A28 A25 Farms
Åsnesboka, v. 2 1956 DL596.A28 A25 Farms

There are two books on Solor but I suspect based on the titles that they probably are not going to be very useful.

Skirbekk, H. Øvre Solør, v. 1 1973 DL576.S63 O42 General
Skirbekk, H. Øvre Solør, v. 2 1979 DL576.S63 O42 General

Here is a link to UND Library list of Bygdebøker.

I strongly believe these two are the ones you are looking for, but how to connect them?

Some clues:
Berthe Marie is said to have been married before she met Iver?
She had possibly 3 sons who all died on-route to America?
A daughter named Inga stayed in Hønefoss?

#157 Iver Iversen
Born: 11 May 1823
Christening: 19 May 1823, Hof, Hedmark, Norway
Parents: Iver Iversen Knæppen & Elena Eriksdr

#110 Berte Maria Andersdatter
Born: 20 Jun 1825
Christening: 03 Jul 1825, Hof, Hedmark, Norway
Parents: Anders Haagensen Mellun & Berte Bergersdr Glorvigen

I have scanned through the following books, without finding anything to solve the puzzle:

Åsnesboka 1. Published: Flisa 1953
Åsnesboka 2. Published: Flisa 1956
Hof bygdebok. 1 : Gards- og slektshistorie for Åsa og Nord-Jara. Published: Flisa, Åsnes kommune, 1983
Hof bygdebok. B. 2 : Gards- og slektshistorie for Sør-Jara og Mosogn. Published: Flisa, Åsnes kommune, 1985
Hof bygdebok. B. 3 : Gards- og slektshistorie for Østsiden og Finnskogen. Published: Flisa, Åsnes kommune, 1995

Such farmbooks rely heavily on churchbooks, and where they are lost, the books are influenced by that. Main sources are census'es and family history from the local residents.

I could not see Iver Iversen mentioned in the books, but his father is mentioned with the 1865-census info.

Thank you all for your time and effort to locate my ancestors. All of your info is helpful and appreciated very much. I also think these are my grt grand parents and will consider them as such and hope to someday find something that proves it all and ties it all together.
If I come across any further info I will share it with you all. Thank you again. Arlys Heddan

This Inga is a mystery! Can't find anyone that could fit in the online census'es. Assumption is that her place or birth is listed as Hof, Soløer, Solør, Aasnes, Åsnes, Vaaler or Våler. Maybe Inga was her nickname?

Do you have the postcard in question? Would be great to see it, to look for other clues.
Any chance of finding the emigration/immigration record?
