Okay, good people, I am going to "go for broke" as the saying goes... and if you can help, I would really appreciate it.

Can anyone help me "go back further"... to locate information on John Johnson's father's - Jens Hansen Schiefstadeie's - father and mother? To give you target on Jens Hansen's birth, according to Doug, his father died when he was about 88 years of age in 1890, which would mean he was born about 1802 and one living relative of Doug who knew of Jens Hansen knew him as Jens Hansen (hesthagen). He apparently left Norway, it is believed with his wife, Helene Johannesdatter, also, to live in Nicolett, Minnesota USA, and was on the state census record there in 1885 and he is listed there as 84 years of age (which could mean he was born in 1801). He does not appear in any census that I could find before or after; and his wife was not on any at all...
Doug has the Norseland Lutheran Church Book but it doesn't give any further information about Jens Hansen either.

I am going to search the ship's records to see if I can locate the passage from Norway to America for Jens & his wife Helene; it would have to be before 1885 to get him on the 1885 census living in Nicollet with his son, Peder (Peter) Johnson.

Not sure about this, since Schjefstadeie is located in Østre Toten, Oppland, but here is a marriage record from Sem, Vestfold:

#11 Jens Hansen Hestehagen (23) & Hellene Hansdr Emmerød (23)
Marriage: 11 Jun 1830, Sem, Vestfold, Norway
His father: Hans
Her father: Hans
Vestfold county, Sem, Parish register (official) nr. I 5 (1825-1842), Marriage records 1830, page 408-409.

Thank you Jens Peter. The Hestehagen is interesting an interesting suggestion given what DougJ's relative said... the year / age of the groom - 23 instead of 27 or 28 years old in 1830 - ? Hard to say. But thank you for the digging...
I have no idea how extensive the Lutheran Church Records are or the difficulty one has to find anything in them, but I really appreciate your search.

The above marriage from Sem, Vestfold must be a namesake.

Here are your folks in Østre Toten, Oppland, census-1865.

Jens Hansen (63), farmer, born Vestre Toten, Oppland
Helene Johansdr (60), his wife, born Østre Toten, Oppland
Helene Marie Jensdr (22), their daughter, born Østre Toten, Oppland
Residence: Hestehagen, Østre Toten, Oppland

Thank you again. If DougJ hasn't seen it, I will pass it along. If they were in their 60's during that census, then they really were pretty old when they left Norway for America...
I have not been able to find them since the information on passengers beyond what you have on your website is pretty scattered and I have not found Jens & Helene on the same ship after searching quite a number of them that came into port in the 1880's ... and I would assume, perhaps wrongly they would have traveled together...
Thanks again and again...

Have you seen Jens Hanson (68) & Ellen Hanson (69) in census-1870 for Nicollet County, Minnesota, USA ?
It seems like Jens, wife Helene and daughter Helene Marie emigrated 1866-1869.

Could it be them?

1866/29
Jens Hansen Skjefstadhagen
NN kone
Hans Skjefstadhagen, far

With the ship «Olaf», departure Christiania 22. april: Jens Hansen Skjefstadhagen, adult,m, !! !! Skjefstadhagen, adult, f, wife, Hans !! Skjefstadhagen adult, m, father. We have not succeeded in indentifying these 3 people from Skjefstadhagen.

"We" are http://slektshistorielaget.no who is a heritage database from Toten, Oppland. You could try to contact them on toten.emigrant@gmail.com

Hans Skjefstadhagen is listed as father, and could be Jens' father. Jens would be about 65; thus if this is the correct ppl, Hans would be in his 80's or 90's...

Also Jan, and Darlene when you read this, It shows in this tree that there is possibly a son Hans. It shows, excluding the half brother, that Jens had 8 children. It shows the names as follows Mrs. Lewison, Nora Rolfstad, Johanna Lundholm(married 1863 to Sven)Mrs. Baladin, Hans, Mathia Davidson, Anna (johnson) Seide Peder Jensen (peter Johnson)

We know for sure that Jens' father was named Hans. If not; Jens would not have a lastname of Hansen. Likewise, you know that Helene Johansdr's father was named Johan...
