Searching for Cornelius Johnson, born May 1845. Emigrated from Norway around 1869. This is all the information I have, except for information I have when he married my great grandmother in Maryland. I do not know his parents or place of birth, or ship of departure. Please any help is appreciated.

Where does Mai 1845 comes from?
He was 24 when he em. most liklely without the parents ??

1900 US Census says he was born May 1845. Is there an additional source for that?

A descendant names him as Cornelius Jacob Johnson , spouse Mary J. Messenger. Source is a 2012 post on Ancestry message boards.
Back in an edit: here is more that is posted on Ancestry:
"Cornelius (Jakob Kornelius) Johnson. He was born in Sandsvaer, Buskerud, Norway in May 1845. He died on Nov. 12, 1912 in Batimore, Maryland. His parents were Nielsen Johannes Johnson (1798-1873) and Ellen Kristine Hans Jorgensdatter (1808-1881). Cornelius came to America in 1869"
Emigration is said to be 22 April 1870 when Jakob Cornelius Johannesen Hillestad sailed from Oslo/Kristiania:

All the above was posted on Ancestry message board.
The American descendant says that Grethe Johannesen Hillestad who emigrated with Jakob Kornelius was his sister, so she seems to confirm this is the correct man. No birth/baptism record was posted.

I wonder about that emmigration record with Jacob and his sister Grethe. Here is a Jacob and Grethe emmigrating, but arriving in Quebec. Seems to be an odd route to get to Maryland. Also the Digitalarkivet record lists Stoughton as their destination.

I wonder if this might not be the Jacob from the Oslo emmigration record. He is married with 7 children. Wife was born in Minnesota.

Thank you everyone for your help. I was told via FB Norwegian Genealogy that I was tracking the wrong Cornelius Johnson, the same one that many have on Ancestry.com, I am puzzled..
Brian K. Gaber : Jacob Cornelius Hillestad died in Fillmore County, Minnesota on 19 Feb 1923.

Vickie Hart Brian K. Gaber - I believe Jacob and his SISTER, Grethe/Greta emigrated together. (See the emigration record above, both were single.) So I think Sophia was Jacob's first wife. But this conversation is not relevant to Janet Stevens Heishman, as her Jacob lived in Baltimore!

Since there is proof that Jacob Cornelius Johannessen Hillestad (born 30 Oct 1848) lived in Fillmore County, Minnesota, from at least 1875 until he died - there is really no way he can be the same person.

Brian K. Gaber He is in Baltimore in 1900 and 1910. The 1910 census also supports a birth of May 1845 (he is listed as 64 yrs old when the census was taken in April 1910).

This matches all the census records are confirms that the Jacob Cornelius born on 30 Oct 1848 is the wrong person.

This from the Norwegian 1865 census following this search critieria. Came down to one candidate Peter Kornelius Johanson:
given name / fornavn containing "orneliu" : chornelius, cornelius, korneliu, kornelius
surname/ etternavn strarting with "jo" : johanes, johannes, johannesen, johanness, johannessen, johannesøn, johanns, johans, johansen, johanss, johnnassen, johns, johnsen, jokums, jonas, jonasen, jons, jonsen
birth year / fodeaar exactly : 1845

Records issue for exploring this candidate from familysearch.org:
"Microfilm at the Family History Library for Fjære prestegjeld (clerical district). Contains priest and sexton records for Fjære parish. Includes Grimstad parish until 1885. Was separated from Øyestad clerical district in 1845. See Øyestad clerical district for earlier records. On the 4th Oct 1933 there was a fire in the church. Baptism records 1845 are missing as are confirmation records for 1860 in Fjære, so there will be no way to check this Cornelius' birthdate against the Cornelius in America. Will look at Øyestad.
Here he is in the 1875 census. This plus Anton's find of a headstone in Norway for him eliminates this candidate:
