I am searching for the parents and siblings of my grandmother Marit (Mary) Oleson who was born in 1858 in Norway and had emigrated to USA in 1866 when she was 8 years old. She and my grandfather Peter Lee were married on July 14, 1883 in St. James, Watonwan County, Minnesota.
My grandfather Peter Lee had also emigrated from Norway in 1866 when he was 19-20 years old along with his parents, brother and four sisters from Storlien nedre farm in Bæverdalen district of the parish of Lom in Oppland. They sailed on the bark Gustav Adolphe from Bergen May 14 and arrived at Montreal, Quebec on June 16 after ship inspection at Grosse Isle.
The family changed their surname from "STORLII" or "STORLIEN" to "LEE" upon entering the USA.
The Lee family (my great grandfather Syver Persson Storlii (Lee), my great uncle Torkjell Syversson Storlii (Lee), and my grandfather Per Syversson Storlii (Lee) each filed on homestead land in the Long Lake district of Watonwan County, Minnesota.
My grandparents Peter and Mary had seven children, all born at Long Lake in Minnesota between 1885 and 1896. They sold their land in Minnesota and moved to and bought a farm in 7th district of Morgan County, Tennessee sometime between 1896 and 1899 as they show up there on the 1900 USA census. The family (minus my grandmother) next show up on the 1906 Canadian census on a farm near Weldon, Saskatchewan. My grandmother Marit (Mary) had died in 1904, 2 years after arriving in Canada in 1902. She is buried in the Weldon Lutheran Cemetery which is approx. 4.5 miles northwest of Weldon, Saskatchewan.
I have been very fortunate in finding both sides of my grandfather's family in Norway (as far back as 1725) but have had no such luck in finding any trace of my grandmother's family.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

The name Marit Olesen/Olsen/Olsdatter is very common.
If you knew her exact birthdate is would be much easier to find the correct Marit.
Here is one possible Marit born about 1858 and emigrating 1866. Her surname here is Johnsdatter according to Norwegian naming rules, but many families emigrating together took the head of household (the husband/father)'s surname as familyname in US. Her father was John Olsen, so the family most likely used Olsen/Olson in US. Many emigrants travelled to US via Canada.

No 40:

Not easy to find your Marit.
Age 8, we can assume she em. with the parents and that her fathers lastname was Olsen?
If so we need her fathers firstname.
An example; if her father was John Olsen, Marit was bapt. as Marit Johnsdatter (Johns daughter) in Norway

Your Peter Syversen and Torkjeld on Storlien 1865 with father Syver and mother Brit Torkjeldsdatter.
Two sisters, Ingri and Mari, Torger Nilsen, his brothers son, and Syvers parents. Ole Pedersen (Syvers brother?) and Synne are the former owners of the farm wth a contract on free supplies on the farm for the rest of their life.

Many em. who came from a farms that ended on Lien/Li, (means hillside) changed to Lee in N. America. Li has th the same pronunciation as Lee.
Storlien- Big hillside

As you say, Storlien is located to Lom

If you think that the Mar 1858 birth listed in the 1900 Census is correct that would at least limit the number of potential candidates. Here are three. That is assuming that her fathers first name was Ole. Probably a big assumption here.

Name: Marit Olesdatter
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 13 mar 1858
Baptism Date: 30 mai 1858 (30 May 1858)
Baptism Place: Selbu, Sor Trondelag, Norway
Father: Ole Johnsen
Mother: Brynild Pedersdr
FHL Film Number: 307012
Reference ID: 2:1DFR9P8

Name: Marit Olsen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 9 mar 1858
Baptism Date: 5 apr 1858
Baptism Place: Os,Hedmark,Norway
Father: Ole Olsen
Mother: Bendikke Mikkelsdr
FHL Film Number: 124472

Name: Marit Olsen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 19 mar 1858
Baptism Date: 9 mai 1858 (9 May 1858)
Baptism Place: Stangvik,More Og Romsdal,Norway
Father: Ole Ellingsen
Mother: Ildri Andersdr

Thanks to everyone for the many and quick responses to my posting re: Marit Oleson.
In response to lyndal40's questions:
-"What do you know about her parents? "
Answer: I do not know anything about her parents; that was why I posted the query.

- "have you ever found her in the 1880 Census?"
Answer: I found a Marit Oleson (single & born abt 1857) on the 1880 census working as a servant for a Thompson family in Minnehaha, Dakota Territory. I had previously found this Marit as a possible but unfortunately on the 1880 census there isn't even a column for the emigration date and none of the information on this census points me to her parents.

- "Probably the marriage liscense for Mait Olson"
Answer: I found this info some time ago (2005) and contacted Watonwan County Records who advised me that bride's parents name(s) would not be on the licence.

"Probably your grandmother and family in the 1900 Census. Sometimes it is useful to have as much information upfront as possible."
Answer: Since 2005 I have had copies of the 1870, 1880, 1885, 1895, & 1900 USA census records tracing the "Lee's" and then starting in 1885 census also Marit as well but they don't help in tracing Marit other than showing her age, country of birth (Norway), and year of immigration (1866).

I don't know her birthdate, place of birth in Norway, nor her parents names, nor any of her brothers or sisters names nor whether she had any siblings at all.

Can someone tell me how I could access the ELCA baptisms deaths / funerals database for Long Lake Lutheran Church in Watonwan County, Minnesota.
It should contain baptism information for the additional 2 children of Peter and Marit's : Oliver Frank b. Oct. 19, 1891(my father) & Mabel Christine b. April 1, 1896 (another aunt) including identifying their godparents.
Very likely if Marit had any brothers or sisters in Minnesota, one or more of them would be called on to be godparents to at least one of the 7 children.
I will start checking out those godparents identified in jkmarler's
posting and try to determine if any could be related to Marit.

Hopefully the ELCA baptisms / deaths / funerals database will as well also reveal the Minnesota burial location of my great grandfather (Marit's father-in-law) Severt Lee (d. 1879 in Watonwan County) and my great grandmother (Marit's mother-in-law) Brit (Betsy) Lee (d. 1907 in Watonwan County).

You can take a temporary, one week free subscription at archives.com which includes the ELCA databases of baptisms & confirmations, marriages, and funerals. Searching is a quirky process, first by last name. required, then by first name and you can limit to only the appropriate ELCA database, if needed and by state geographically. Once you find a name you are allowed to browse back and forth a bit within the pages but you can't just browse from the get go. Searching of the faddernes for Marit's possible relatives, is important, but you may also want to see who she was faddernes for before and after her marriage. The faddernes are only findable via a browse, they are not indexed.

There was a funeral for Marit Syversdatr Lee but contained no death date burial 3 Nov 1916 age 78 years, died at St. Peter. Perhaps there were family in St. Peter but there was also a state hospital for people with mental issues. She lived with Peter and Marit in the 1895 Minnesota state census viewable at familysearch.org

Why did the family go to Tennessee? Perhaps Marit (the wife) has family there? Norwegians, even Olson, there should stand out Who were the witnesses of Peter's and Marit's wedding?--another possible source of her relations.

Another possible option would be to search only for Marit, Marie, etc. b Norway 1858 =/- 2 years of any last name in Watonwan in 1880 census--perhaps she wasn't using Olson.
