Hello - could someone translate the following entry under "occupation" from the 1801 census for Manger parish, Hordaland: "Naerer sig ved at fare med sin ege jaegt". In the first and last words, the a and e are joined into the Norwegian letter.
My online dictionary can make no sense of this.
This man's position in the household is described as: "opholder sig der"…he is sojourning there…visiting there?
A "Jekt/Jægt" in Norwegian is a sloop. The translation of the occupation above is correct. You can also say "Gets his income by running his own sloop". The sloop could have been used for public transportation, transportation of goods or fishing, especially herring. They come in different sizes...
