However no connection with the name Weng or any variation of that name.

Sorry if this has been posted before. Here is a Hakon Eriksen b 1864 and listed as foster son. There is an Henrikke age 23 in the household as well:

Guess his viability would depend on circumstances in which Emanuel can be Emil...What's a bruskjører? Google translates as Brus driver, not a lot of help.

When was the 1900-census held in this area of New York?
Since there is no Hakon listed, he might have emigrated after the census was held, but before Jørgine came 31. aug. 1900.

Jackie is referring to the man named Hakau Erekson, which I assumed was a poor rendering of Hakon Eriksen. The US Census for him in New York was taken on 6 June. See earlier page for the rest of the census data

He is about the only Hakon living in New York City in the 1900 Census. There are two other Hakons, one age 11 living with family and one age 26 born in Denmark.also living with his family.

Name: Hakau Erekson
[Nakan Erekson]
Age: 36
Birth Date: Nov 1863
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1900: Manhattan, New York, New York
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1885
Relation to Head of House: Boarder
Marital Status: Widowed
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway

I know it is a big stretch but could the Hakon Weng that we read from the immigration record actually be a misreading of Hakon Emil?????

In Hallinglag lore, there was a young woman who was affianced to a man in America but his family felt she was "beneath" them, even in America, and refused to accept her. She was so overwhelmed that she gave up being a girl and went to work in logging camps as a cook under the name of "Billy Williams" and lived the rest of her life as the character she'd created. After she died her true identity was discovered and her family finally knew what had become of their Ingeborg.

An interesting story. We have to presume we sometimes bump, unawares, into gay or transgender people in genealogy quests. It's hard nowadays to swallow that a person of mainstream gender identity would switch genders due to a romance that didn't work out, easier to believe that story would suffice, in its day.

Well, in this case I think the gentleman's name is known. But being overcome by shame or other emotion is definitely something that does happen and isolating yourself as a protective measure also. Besides, in America, if you fail wherever you are at, you can always remake yourself via a move away, or at least you could in days gone by.

Agreed one answer to the family mystery could be that the daughter chose not to write home - and there could be myriad reasons why she didn't. She might be living but her identity is obscured by a marriage or use of an unexpected name, adopted to shield herself or other reasons. My main point is that it's unknown if the man was a wicked man, and that it seems unlikely, to me, that he lured her for the purpose of prostitution or white slave trade, since the former isn't convenient and the latter, to my knowledge, didn't exist.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9Q-86SD

A Gina Vandem coming to New York in 1939, unfortunately can't judge significance if any since familysearch is having technical problems with their images, again.

Name Gina Vandem
Event Type Immigration
Event Date 1939
Event Place New York, New York, United States
Gender Female
Age 63
Birthplace Norway
Ship Name Oslofjord
Birth Year (Estimated) 1876

Birthdate from the 1915 census is July 1875, not quite a match.

Here is her migration record from Norway, so she can be eliminated from consideration:

Good question from Anton re reading of "Weng." Here's a list of some New York orphanages 1900. If Jorgine (alternately Georgina?) was pregnant or got pregnant, there might be a motherless child surname Strand in 1905 census. A long shot, but a possible fit with her traveling to a man who seems to be AWOL.
