I am researching Ole Pedersen Selseng (1808-1903) and Ragnild Tostendatter Alme(1812-1884). They lived on Selseng Farm in Sogn. They went to America around 1848, I think, and settled in the the Mt Morris area of Waushara County Wisconsin. My problem is with 2 of the children: Johannes Olsen Selseng supposedly born in 1836 and his sister Ragnild Oldsdatter also born 1836 on the Selseng Farm. I have found the birth record for Ragnild in the archives to support this birth.

I don't believe the date of birth for Johannes Olsen Selseng. I have found census reports in Wisconsin for a John Selseng (1870 census) age 33 and in the 1880 census for Wautoma for John Selseng born abt 1831. I have searched the Archives from 1829 to 1836 and can't find a record for him. In the 1900 census there is a John P Selseng born abt 1840.

Hopefully someone can help me clear this up.

It may be that Tosten died in 1840, see number 43.

I wonder if Johannes Selseng is not from a totally different family. What makes you think his father and mother are the Ole and Ranghild you listed above.

This guy has been discussed in previous topics. And it is a mix of names and families.
Johannes Olsen Selseng is not an Olsen, but his name was Johannes Pedersen Selseng.

Johannes Pedersen
Born: 06 Mar 1838, Hafslo, Sogn & Fjordane, Norway
Chri: 11 Mar 1838, Hafslo, Sogn & Fjordane, Norway
Conf: 25 May 1854 (Ascension Day), Sogndal, Sogn & Fjordane, Norway
Dead: 06 Sep 1919 in Waushara County, Wisconsin, USA
He married Mary Pedersdatter Adams in 1867, and can be found as John Selsing (49) in Wautoma, Waushara, Wisconsin, census-1880.
His parents were: Peder Nielsen Valaker & Martha Larsdr

From The moms Family Tree on Ancestry.com:
Jon Selsing was born Johannes Pedersen. His father's name was Peder Nilsen and mother Marte Larsdatter. He was born on the Vollaker farm in Hafslo but he and his parents move to Sogndal and lived on the farm Selseng prior to his leaving in 1863 to come to America. He came to Wisconsin the Mt. Morris area. The information about his marriage and children are from the Luthern Church in Mt. Morris. There are other Selsing's records in this church but I believe they are not related"

The family moved from Hafslo to Sogndal in 1839.

Marriage: 17 Oct 1837
Bachelor & soldier Peder Nielsen Sættre (20) & Marthe Larsdtr Mælem (28)
His father: Niels Pedersen Solvorn
Her father: Lars Mælem

Peder Nielsen Selseng died 13 Sep 1860 in Sogndal, age 45. (Born about 1815).

Thank you Jan Peter for clearing it up for us. A hint of this came when much of the information I was finding on him listed him as.

Name: Johannes P Selsing
Spouse: Mari P Selsing
Church Name: Mt Morris Holden
Church Location: Waushara County, Wisconsin

It probably did not help that both families lived in at least part of the time in Waushara County Wisconsin.

As Jan Peter has pointed out above Johannes P Selseng (Selsing) stems from Peder Nielsen.

At the same time in this same county there was the unrelated family of Ole Pedersen Selseng and wife Ragnhild Tostensdatter and the family of their son Peder Olsen and his wife Martha.

There are a large number of Family Trees on Ancestry.com that have combined in some fashion the two families making it somewhat difficult to sort it all out. But it is likely that there is no Johannes Olsen Semleng born in 1836 in Songdal with parents Ole Selseng and Ragnhild Tostensdatter.

Here is Johannes' marriage record, where it states that his parents was Peder & Marthe, ie. not Ole & Ragnild.

And as JaneC pointed out in another topic:
Buried at Holden Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mount Morris, where John P Selsing is buried, is a Lewis P Selsing.
His full birth date is inscribed on his tombstone: 25 January 1846.
And in the Sogndal churchbook is a Lars born 25 January 1846 to Peder Nielsen and Marte Larsdatter, Dvergedal.
Lars Pedersen Selseng emigrated to America May 1st 1861. #64, right page.
Lars/Lewis is a brother to Johannes. Johannes is also born on Dvergedal, see #35.
A wide variety of farmnames here... Valaker, Dvergedal, Selseng

A newspaper article from 1858, that might shed a light on Peder Nielsen Selseng's destiny. He died quite young, only 45 yrs old.
Peder Nilsen Selseng from "Inner Sogn" is among a list of 24 men that have not repaid loans when due to Bank of Norway. An auction over what they had put in pledge would be carried out in 4 weeks, dated Bergen, April 15, 1858.
Peder Nielsen Selseng died 13 Sep 1860.

Ole Pedersen Selseng was a participant when The Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in America on Saturday 05 Feb 1853. The event took place in Koshkonong, WI.

Together with Ole Knudsen Trovatten, Ole Pedersen Selseng represented East Koshkonong Congregation.
A story written by Mr. Trovatten here, describes his emigrant journey to America. His experiences might be similar to what the Selseng family experienced.

A book published 1903 about what Norwegian emigrants have achieved in America, says that without doubt; the richest norwegian farmer in Wisconsin is Thrond Thompson (Selseng) at Albion Prairie, Dane County, Wis. It says he has values worth half a million Dollars. Inflation Calculator says that $500,000 of 1903 dollars was equal to $13,513,513 in 2015.

Not sure who this Thrond Thompson (Selseng) could be, but this family could be related: Emigration on the same day as Ole Pedersen Selseng on April 1st 1844 is Torstein Trondsen Selseng (28), together with wife Kari Andreasdatter (32) and children Thrond (3) and Brithe (½).
Son Thrond Torsteinsen Selseng (3) could be Thrond Thompson Selseng.
