lyndal40 - The Ljot/Ljat Grundyson in your last message is the brother of Grundy L. Grundyson. There is a lot of mixing of information on Ljot/the son and Ljot/the father.

Grundy L Grundyson was born 9/23/1877 in Bygland, Polk Co., MN and died 7/29/1933 Sletten Township, Polk Co., MN - he married Tone Skore July 1914.

Grundy's father - Ljot Grundeyson Grundyson was born May 15, 1840 in Setesdal, Norway and passed away ? in Bentru Township, North Dakota

Grundy's mother - Ragnild Tarkelsdatter Grundeyson Grundyson was born 8/18/1843 in Setesdal, Norway and died 4/8/1900 in Grand Forks Co., ND - buried in Rosendal Cemetery There are two dates for their marriage 7/26/1860 and 12/26/1863.

We have 5 children possible for them - 4 for sure, question on the other one. Grundy, Torkel 1881-1956, Ljot 3/13/1883-7/20/1934 (on his tombstone), Ingeborg - baptism date 12/21/1873 in Norway, Gunhild has two Baptism dates 4/15/1866 and 10/30/1864 in Bygland, Aust-Agder, Norway!

What can you make of this? And Ljot (born 1840) has his father listed as Grunde Olavsson Austad - which is also listed as Tone Skore's great grandfather - Therefore Grundy's grandson married his great-granddaughter - I just can't see that - there has to be someone else on the Grundy L. Grundyson side and not connected to my side. My Dad always said they were another Grundyson family and not connected. What a puzzle? Let me know what you think.

No one married his great-granddaughter.

Grundy L Grundyson married his first cousin once removed. Tone Kittelsdatter Skore. Not that unusual.

Put the information above side by side and you see how it sorts out.

One Family The Other Family

Olav Grundessen Austad 1783 Olav Grundessen Austad 1783

Grunde Olavsson Austad 1808 Grunde Olavsson Austad 1808

Ljot Grundesen Austad 1840 brother to Olav Grundesen Hegland 1833

Grundy Grundyson 1877 cousin to Gunhild Olavsdatter Hegland 1859

Wife is Tone Kittelsdatter Skone 1888 Daughter is Tore Kittesdatter Skone 1888

Relationship is Grundy L Grundyson married his cousins daughter. I would not consider that at all unusual.

There were actually three children named Gunhil born to this family Many times when a child died young the next child of that sex was named after the decease child. It is also possible that they named the children the same name or names that were very close to the other name . A little hard to tell in this case what is what but they did have these three children with a very similar name. More work would have to be done to know if any of the Gunhil or Gunhild children died young.

Thank you! Thank you! I think a trip to the Rosendal Cemetery is in order. It isn't that far from me and I could possible find out what year Ljot (1840) passed away. We have a picture of the 4 of 7 children - Grundy, Torkel, Gunhild and Ljot but missing Ingeborg and 2 more. I copied this information and will work on it. Thank you so much! I will try to get ahold of Sandnes church and see if the 3 missing died over in Norway.

That would be the Ljot (5/15/1840)'s son Ljot born 3/13/1883-7/20/1934 married to Asbjor 1879-1960. I am still on the hunt for the father's Ljot (5/15/1840) death date - his wife is also supposed to be buried at Rosendal Cemetery - born in 8/18/1843 Setesdal and died 4/8/1900. I would assume that if she is buried there that he would be too. You all have been just wonderful with this and I thank you so much.

If you remember the post from your earlier subject, Lojdt and Ragnild left Norway in 1877 with only two children one Gunnild age 5 and Ingeborg age 11 months. That means only two children were left behind in Noway.

Here is a link to the record of them leaving Noway.

Emigation Record

The first born Gunnild died November 6, 1864

#41

The second Gunnild died July 8, 1869

#37

This is likely the burial record for Ingeborg Ljotsdatter. Her burial is listed as 1884 but her death is listed as 1878. Some thing wrong here. Also the transcriber interpreted the cursive L as an S.

Ingeborg Sjotsdatter
in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1969
Name: Ingeborg Sjotsdatter
Record Type: Burial
Birth Place: Sotersd Norge
Death Date: 27 Feb 1878
Burial Date: 31 Aug 1884

I've seen that phenom before in early Norwegian-American records. I think what it means is that at the time of the death, the family may not have been in a convenient spot for a funeral. When they got settled then they had a service. Notice the 10 or so burials all on the same day.

Well I think the above record also is the death record for Ljot Grundeson. Here the transcriber has made the same mistake in making an L into an S. Also the death is listed as Nov 6, 1882 and burial 1884?

Sjot Grundeson
in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1969Name: Sjot Grundeson
Record Type: Burial
Birth Place: Sotersd Norge
Death Date: 6 Nov 1882
Burial Date: 31 Aug 1884
Church Name: Setersdal
Church Location: Fisher, Minnesota
