Also trying to fill in family tree beyond Simon’s parents Ole Simonsen and Tora Issacsdtr.

Maybe some further information on Tora Isachsdatter will enable you to fill in her family tree as well.

You already know that Ole Simonsen married Tora Isacsdatter in 1843 and that the parents of Tora or Thora are Isach Jacobsen Skjeleie and Rønnaug Christensdatter who married in January of 1801.

Here are Isach and Rønnoug on the Skielle farm in the 1801 Census

1801

The census lists Isach as being born in 1778.

It also lists him as the son-in-law of Christian Hansen and Brit Andersdatter. Thus giving you the parents of his wife Rønnoug.

Here is an Isach baptized Dom 13 p Trin or Sept 13, 1778. Father is Jacob Isachsen.

See the last record under Dom 13 p Trin far right column.

Link

There is a Jacob Isachsen born abt 1741 with wife Dorthe Andersdatter living on Havn in the 1801 Census.

1801

So a step back in time would give you a

Isach Jacobsen born in 1778 with parents Jacob Isachsen and Dorthe Andersdatter

and married to

Rønnoug Christiansdatter born 1780 with parents Christian Hansen and Brit Andersdatter.

Rønnoug was baptized October 8, 1780. Her father used the farm name at that time so is listed as Christian Barnål.

See third column from the left and sixth entry down.

Usually when we get this far back in time we can find a Family Tree on Geni.com. As with all online trees you need to do your homework to verify that the line is accurate. Here is the family tree for Isak Jacobsen Jacobstad (Barnaal) and his wife Ingri Rønnaug Barnål.

As you will see this tree can take you a very long ways back in Norwegian history and so needs to be approached with some caution.

It may be worth seeing if there is a Bygdebok that covers the Vågå area for the 1700's and later

Above are some marriages of your family line. Here are some baptisms.

In the Geni.com tree Jacob Isaksen has a father named Isak Halvorsen Moen and is born in 1740. This is likely his baptism record.

Jacob Isaksen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Jacob Isaksen
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 27 mar 1740
Baptism Place: , Vaagaa , Opland, Norway
Father: Isach Moen
FHL Film Number: 125631

See the eighth record down in the first column on the right hand page.

Link

And his wife was baptized on Dec 5, 1756. (Note the 1801 Census listed her birth year as 1865, that is likely wrong)

Dorthe Andersen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Dorthe Andersen
[Dorthe Olsen]
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 5 des 1756 (5 Dec 1756)
Baptism Place: , Vaagaa , Opland, Norway
Father: Anders Olsen
FHL Film Number: 125631

See the second record under 1757.

Link

In the Geni.com tree Christian Hansen has his birth year listed as 1845. There is only one candidate with father named Hans in the Ancestry.com data base. Father is using the farm name.

Christen Hansen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Christen Hansen
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 8 jun 1745
Baptism Place: , Vaagaa , Opland, Norway
Father: Hans Faevolden
FHL Film Number: 125631

A little tough to find the original record, but maybe the tenth record down in the second column from the left.

Link

And this is likely the baptism of his wife Brit Andersdatter.

Brit Andersen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Brit Andersen
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 27 jan 1754
Baptism Place: , Vaagaa , Opland, Norway
Father: Anders Andersen
FHL Film Number: 125631

See the fifth record down in the far right hand column

In a post above I recommended that you try to confirm some of the information in the Geni.com tree using the Bygdebøk for Sel and Vågå. Unfortunately I checked into those books and found that while there are bygdebøk for Sel and Vågå, they are only general history books and do not contain information on farms and families. So they would not be of much use to you.

However I do see that for example for the profile of Isak Halvorsen Moen that one or more of the manger of his profile do list information on him obtained from other sources. Several bits of information seemed to have been obtained from Nord-Gudbandsdal pantebok ie Nord-Gudbandsdal Mortgage Book's.

That does increase my trust level in the tree. Also you should note that you can contact any or all of the managers of a profile by email by clicking on the contact mangers button.

More marriage records.

The parents of Dorthe Andersdatter born in 1756 were Anders Olsen and Sigrid Olsdatter. This is likely their marriage record.

Anders Olssen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Anders Olssen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 10 nov 1748
Marriage Place: Vaagaa ,Opland,Norway
Spouse: Sigri Olsdr
FHL Film Number: 125631

The original record is the first record in the far right hand column

General question, my mother insists that her dad said his family go back to the Sami people(he referred to them as Laplanders as this was a very long time ago)). How does one begin to research this? How do you know if you’ve discovered an ancestor that is Sami?

There are some online articles that might be of use to you.

Family Search

Nordic Names

You might also explore the ancestry Marie Karoline Nilsson. I noticed from the marriage record that was posted by Jackie that she and Simon were marrried in Vardø, Fnnnmark in the far north. While Sami lived in many places they did tend to predominate in the northern parts of Norway. So exploring her ancestry might be of some use in your search.

This is likely the baptism of Marie Karoiine posted by Jackie , the birth date fits that on the marriage record, but not the one you have on her profile page in your Tree

Maria Carolina Nilsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Maria Carolina Nilsen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 6 jun 1850
Baptism Date: 15 sep 1850
Baptism Place: , Ibestad, Troms, Norway
Father: Nils Rasmussen
Mother: Eva Johanna Isaksdr
FHL Film Number: 127109

Marie Carolina is number 112. Her parents are not married to each other but it would appear that Nils Rasmussen was a married man.

Here is a Nils Rasmussen in the 1865 Census living at Livelten. That is the farm name given for Nils in the marriage record and in the baptism record.

1865

Here is some further information on this Nils Rasmussen. Is he the same Nils Rasmussen as the father of Marie Karolina, a little hard to know.

Nils Rasmussen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Nils Rasmussen
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Birth Date: 1815
Marriage Date: 19 okt 1845 (19 Oct 1845)
Marriage Place: , Ibestad, Troms, Norway
Father: R. Nilsen
Spouse: Seri Eriksdr
FHL Film Number:

#15

The 1865 Census show his birth place as Tønsæt (same as Tynset) , so probably this person.

Nils Rasmusen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Nils Rasmusen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 8 sep 1815
Baptism Date: 1 okt 1815 (1 Oct 1815)
Baptism Place: Tynset, Hedmark, Norway
Father: Rasmus Nilsen
Mother: Barbro Nilsdr
FHL Film Number: 124467
Reference ID: 2:SH9JS4

Hello! I’ve been researching Maria Karoline Nilssen’s mother
Eva Johanna isaksdr Lyng and I’ve found records on a Norwegian document site that show her born
in 1825 in Kaafjord. It’s a census from 1866. Of course no Nils Rasmussen.
But I feel the info I got from another document showing Maria and Simon in Vardø
in 1871 listing Eva and what looks like other family members like William Nilssen , a Nikoline, a Marit, and some folks with the last name Astrup.

Maria Karoline’s birthdate on her headstone reads June 12, 1950. She passed away in 1916 and Simon did not pass until 1931.
After Maria passed Simon moved to Montana with his son, John Bracken and his wife.

Thank you,
Kim Niehouse
