What did this 'Thomas Johnson died in Port Reading, NJ' do for an occupation?
Was he of the Lutheran faith? (the national church of Norway then)

There were at least 8 Lutheran congregations in Oslo in 1853 and those records are available online.
Domkirken menighet (Oslo) 1648-1930
Vestre Aker prestegjeld (Oslo) 1656-1957
Hospital menighet (Oslo) 1734-1976
Tugthus menighet (Oslo) 1758-1879
Rikshospitalet og Kvinneklinikken (Oslo) 1818-1897
Garnison menighet (Oslo) 1820-1921
Gamle Aker menighet (Oslo) 1836-1918
Tugthus og Akershus Fæstnings Slaveri (Oslo) 1839-1912

født means born
døpt means baptised

The listing of church records available online above abbreviates the sections of the books for births/baptism as dp

Well, I've gone through the Oslo indexes of sailors from 1866-1890 and found no person directly named Thomas Johnson. There are bundles of those named Thorvald and other "T" first names with Jonsen, Jensen, Johansen. In the later index which goes up to 1930 there was a Thomas Sigurd Johansen but dated to the mid 19teens.

Also checking the church registers indexed at the Digitalarkivet for any male with the 5 Sept 1853 birthdate found no Thomas in the whole Østlandet.
