| Found an amazing bible (Bibelen) at a book sale in Cleveland, Ohio USA and want to get back to the family. Inscription reads: Jedor (Peter) Olsen Rudd Christiana 1866 June 18. A note inserted reads: This bible was given to my father when he left Christiana for this country in 1863. He was 18 years old when he came to America and was 40 years old when he died in 1885. Grandma Maren Rud Blom gave to me. Note was written by Dagmar Rud Krogness. Willing to research just haven't found any path to follow. It is an amazingly well preserved bible and needs to be be in a place of honor. Any help would be most appreciated. TY Karen |

Samson Madsen Krogness (1830-1894) and his family immigrated from Norway to Chicago in 1866. He married twice, once in Norway and once in Chicago. Descendants lived in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Texas, California and elsewhere. Includes some ancestry in Oslo, Oslo and elsewhere in Norway.
The book contain the chapter "The Bonsness family of Mrs. Peter Olsen Rud". Thus; Peter's wife Mary b. ab. 1848 must come from a Bonsness farm in Norway. I believe the Bonsness name could come from Bønsnæs farm in Hole, Buskerud.
KATHARINE DAGMAR RUD KROGNESS is the full name of their daughter, and seems to be the person who wrote the note you refer to. She died 05 Sep 1944.

Census-1880 shows that Peter Olsen Rud have a brother Ole born about 1859.
I think they come from the Rudsødegaard farm in Hole, Buskerud, which is the same area as the Bonsness farm.
Peter and Ole's parents are Ole Pedersen b. 1821 and Dorthea Guldbrandsdr b. 1821.

Not sure what "Christiana 1866 June 18." means, because you also write that he emigrated in 1863...?
The 1865 census was done in January 1866, and if this is Peter Olsen Rudd, he is still in Norway at that time.
A ship named Christiania left Christiania (Oslo) on 20 Jun 1866, arriving Quebec 17 Sep 1866.

Impressing information in such a short time Jan Peter.
Samson Krognes was born on Krognes in Naustdal Sept. 20. 1830.
Samson Absalon born to Mads Johanesen Krognes and Caroline Alexanderdatter #133
Naustdal was a sub parish under Førde at that time.
Samsom was priest, editor and writer and published several magazines and journals in the American society.
Before he emigrated he published a devotional book and hymns, and in America he published a book with religious content.

"C. George" is most likely Christopher George Krogness Jr. (1899-1980), the son of Katharine Dagmar Rud Krogness (1872-1944), and the author of the publication "Ancestors and descendants of Krogness and De Voe families in U.S.A". He died the same year the book was published.

Catherine D Krogness (68) in San Francisco in 1940.
Katherine's husband Christopher George Krogness Sr. (1862-1935) is also buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in California.

The note was written by Dagmar Rud Krogness, ie. Katharine Dagmar Rud Krogness. Her paternal grandma would be Dorthea Gulbrandsdr Rudsødegaard. Does she refer to her maternal grandma...?

With your leads and a weekend at the computer, I am most proud to tell you that the 147 year old Bible is on it's way to Peter's Great Great Great Granddaughter in Minneapolis, Miinnesota. The obits were my most useful resource because they listed family members. The bible had been floating around Cleveland, Ohio for 33 years as the last family member who lived here died in 1980. Great work everyone. A major heirloom has been found!! |

| Hi, I just wanted to say I came across this post while looking for some family information and want to say how awesome it is Karen that you took the time and were able to return this bible to the family. I am a great granddaughter of Maren (not the one to receive the bible) and was named after my aunt Maren McCallister. |

I just want to say how very moved I was to watch this generous gesture unfold.
I still think fondly of the mover who found my great-grandmother's bible on a top shelf in a closet, just moments before my mother was to leave her home of 45 years to come south with me after my dad and brother died. This was an especially fortuitous find because that shelf had been previously checked by a very tall friend who was helping us pack. Somehow it was missed, until the mover did his last inspection. There wasn't much in the way of family history in the bible - I already had those dates. But I learned a bit about my great grandmother simply by paging through, looking for the pages that seemed to have the most wear from having been frequently read.
You have absolutely found the best place around for help with Norwegian genealogy and history. The folks here are the best, most generous sort! And so, too, are you! Blessings to you for your kind work. |
