Hello,

I would greatly appreciate information/transcribing assistance pertaining to Martin Olsen Kjus (b. 22 Oct 1855) and family.

Here is the information that I have:

A kind gentlemen has helped me find his birth record (No. 5). Born in Oslo Hospital/Gamlebyen, Oslo. He was baptized at Galme Aker church in Oslo, Oslo, Norway. Upon researching, I see that the "Dets forældres fulde Navn, borgerlige Stilling og Opholdssted" column is to list occupation and residence along with parental names. Gronland was the residence? Are their occupations here; before the names? I can't make it out. I also can't decipher the grandparents names. Dorthea ?, Halvor Christophersen, Gulbrand Olsen and Erik Halvorsen. I cannot read the first name.

What I think is Martin's parents marriage record:

Groom's name: Gulbrand Olsen
Groom's birthdate: 1813
Groom's birthplace: Kjus
Groom's age in years: 28
Bride's name: Johane Amundsdr
Bride's birthdate: 1810
Bride's birthplace: Kjus
Bride's age in years: 31
Marriage date: 01 Jun 1841
Residence: Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway
Marriage place: Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway
Father of groom's name: Ole Nielsen
Father of bride's name: Amund Christensen

I am not sure that this is correct though. Is it? The names of the parents within this record allow me to question its accuracy.

The family is in the 1865 census. I've also have the following LDS records:

1865 Norwegian Census, Kristiania, 0301. Street name: Filsberget. Street Number: 6. Part of Town: Grønlands Menighed. Farm Owner: Sevrine Nikolaisen. Total Apartments: 10.
Gulbrand Olsen, Husband, Married, Land Worker, Born 1814 in Skedsmo
Johanne Amundsdatter, Wife, Married, No occupation, Born 1818 in Fedt.
Martin Gulbrandsen, Son, Born 1855 in Kristiania.
Johan Gulbrandsen, Son, Born 1863 in Kristiania.
Mathea Gulbrandsdatter, Daughter, Born 1852 in Kristiania.
Karen Gulbrandsdatter, Daughter, born 1858 in Kristiania.

1875 Norwegian Census, Kristinia, 0301. Street Name: Filsberget. Street Number: 6. Number of Apartments: 9.
Gulbrand Olsen, hf, g, Tomtaerbeider, daglonner, 1811, Skedsmo
Johanne Amundsdatter, hm, g, 1815, Fet Sog
Martin Olsen, s, ug, korkeskjaerer, 1855, Enerhougen, Charnia
Karen Olsen, d, ug, I tjeneste, 1858, Enerhougen, Charnia
Johan Olsen, s, 1862, Enerhougen, Charnia
Carl Olsen, s, 1866, Enerhougen, Charnia

Where is "Enerhougen, Charnia"? What does "I tjeneste" mean? Servant?

According to US census records, he immigrated to the US (Traill, Dakota Territory) in 1878-1879. Is there documentation on the Norwegian side saying so? I have further questions regarding immigration, but would like to know if it's okay to post on that subject in this particular forum.

I would not only like to find the names of Martin's grandparents, but I would also like to know if there is any further information regarding Martin's siblings. Did any marry in Norway? Here are their baptism (LDS) records:

Name: Karen Sofie Gulbrandsdatter
Gender: Female

Thank you in advance!

A link to the work previously done and provided for you starting 22 July 2009 -
RootsWeb - "Lookup: Kjus, Tvete..."

The naming patterns are becoming confused. The marriage record that you early list seems absolutely correct for the traditional naming practices. Why do you question it?

You can use various online resources to help you with translation of words -
One "dictionary" list

Note - grandparents are not listed for the baptism. Those are the names of the witnesses/sponsors for the event. See the translations for the church record column headings included with this instructional article:
Norwegian kirkebøker - parish registers

Where you have listed a "first name" that you cannot read - it isn't a first name, it's a patronymic surname that says "Xtophersdatter" meaning Kristophersdatter or Christophersdatter -- just as still used in the US when people write Xmas.

Hospital Gamlebyen (Old city).
Grønland is an area in Oslo, still exist.

The fathers occupation: Arbejermand Gulbrand Olsen - Laborer Gulbrand Olsen and wife Johanne Amundsdr.
The next is the godparents: Dorthea Christophersdatter, Halvor Christophersen, Gulbrand Olsen, Erik Hansen.

Next column "Nei" No, Martin wasn´t christened at home.

Thank you. Before my initial post, I did reference each website that you've provided (and more). While referencing the baptismal column heading translations, I must have misread. I thought grandparents instead of godparents. The names on the birth record didn't match the marriage record and I was therefore confused. My mistake. I understand now.

In regards to the translations, I have tried to find the "literal," if you will, translation for "I tjeneste" and "Enerhougen, Charnia." While referencing the
One "Dictionary" List, "I tjeneste" appears to be service related. I assume it means, "in service," but I wasn't sure if that meant "servant."

I have searched for reference on "Enerhougen, Charnia" and the only thing that I came close to was a possible city in Greece. This confuses me.

"Xtophersdatter" makes perfect sense now. Thanks for clearing that up. There is still one more name that I cannot read. To the left of Dorthea. Barnute Toresen?

Kåre,

Thank you very much for the translations.

Try Barnets Forældre -- although the handwriting for the second word is difficult toward the end.

Where do you see "Charnia"???

Actually you are misreading that 1875 census page in Christiania (Oslo) . It does not read "Charnia" it says Chrania -- which is probably just an abbreviation for Christiania. Enerhougen is of course the same location mentioned on the birth/baptismal record. Take another look -

1875 Oslo

A couple of comments on the baptismal record:
The residence of the parents was "Enerhougen" (written Enerhaugen today) - not Grønland.
In the column for Godparents it says "Barnets Forældre" - the childs parents (Gulbrand Olsen seams to be noted twice!)
and for the 1865 census:
The family were living in the street "Flisberget 6" - the street does no longer exist.
Gulbrand Olsens occupation was "Tomtearbeider" - Yard worker.

Martin's parents marriage record is #6
Bachelor and farm hand Gulbrand Olsen, Kjus
born at Luge, 28 years old,
his father was Ole Nielsen, Hoxholen.
Maiden Johanne Amundsdatter, Kjus
born at Ødegaarden in Fedt, 21 years old,
her father was Amund Christensen.
(Kjus was not the birthplace of either of them, they were working at the Kjus farm when they married.)

As always you are correct Hopkins.

Enerhaugen is an area in Oslo not fare from Grønland (Grønland was the place of living to former christening Anna abowe, sorry)
I think I stop here Terry, to many replays can be very confusing for you.

Johanne Amundsdatter was born Dec 17 1819, and bapt Dec 26, see #2
her parents were Amund Christensen and Andrea Johnsdatter at Øvre Aamodt.
A bapt. record for Gulbrand Olsen cannot be found due to a fire in 1830.
From the marriage record Gulbrands father was Ole Nielsen, Hoxholen. In the 1801 census Ole Nielsen was 19 years and lived with his parents Niels Olesen and Anna Kierstina Pedersdatter and 5 siblings at Hoxhorn (Hoxholen).
Niels Olesen was baptized March 31 1754, see #31 his father was Ole Hoxhorn.

Thank you all very much.

Can you explain or give reference in regards to locations in Norway? I have made an attempt, but would like to know if I am correct.

Enerhaugen, Oslo, Oslo, Norway

Aker, Oslo, Akershus, Norway

Hoxhorn (Hoxholen), Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway

Kjus, Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway

Where was Ødegaarden in Fedt, Øvre Aamodt and Fletsteen?

Martin has told the family that he immigrated as an Olsen, but soon changed his name to Kjus due to a frequent mix up in mail delivery. He has said that Kjus is where he (or his parents) lived. Could it be possible that Gulbrand and Johanne lived in Kjus between 1841-1865? Is there a bygdebok/farm history for Kjus available?

I assume that it's safe to say that we will probably never find the wife of Amund Christensen?

I have found a farm register which lists Martin's name. This is his wifes side (Astri Olsen Tvete per death certificate). It lists:

quote:

5. Astrid Olsdtr. Tveito Kjus 23.09. 1858-1935
G 1886 m Martin Kjus 1855-1947. Barn: George 1886-1955 gm Ida Mae Short; Johanna Olava 1888-1966 gm Albert Stockwell, gm Halvor Qvamme; Maria 1889-1963 gm Charles Svaleson; Olai 1891-1965 gm Rose Thoreson ; Netta 1894-1983 gm Edward Rowley; Clara Matilda 1897-1983; Martin 1899-1976 gm Dorothy Hoffer; Gunhild 1902-1993 gm John George King; Alfred 1905-1970 gm Elsie Spencer. (1635)

The children were all born/married in the US. How would they have those names in a Norwegian record?

Thank you.

Do you think that it's possible that this is Anna Kierstina Pedersdatter's baptismal record?

Name: Ane Kierstina Pedersdatter
Gender: Female
Christening date: 08 Nov 1761
Christening place: FOLDA, NORDLAND, NORWAY
Residence: Folda, Nordland, Norway
Birthdate: 04 Nov 1761
Father's name: Peder Andersen:
Mother's name: Maren Hansdr

She was the only one with middle name "Kierstina."

I'd also like to correct my statement regarding the wife of Amund Christensen. I meant the wife of Ole Nielsen.

Enerhaugen is an area in the eastern part of Oslo, Norway - you should find it on the map I suggested earlier.

Aker was a parish in Oslo, if you search for Gamle Aker on the map you will see where it was. Akershus is a county, as is also Oslo, Norway

Hoxhorn (Hoxholen) farm name in Skedsmo parish, Akershus county, Norway (have not found this farm in the map - probaly no longer exists)

Kjus, farm name in Skedsmo, Akershus, Norway (can be found with the map - You will see that there are 3 farms today, Kjus, Søndre Kjus, and Nordre Kjus.

Where was Ødegaarden in Fedt, Øvre Aamodt and Fletsteen?

Fet (Fedt) is a parish in Akershus county, Ødegaarden (the deserted farm) no longer exists, it could have been under the main farm Aamodt (today written as Åmodt - probably no longer exists)
Fletsteen (today written as Fletstein - can be found with the map)
