I am new to this oversea's research and do not quite understand how to find things. The problem seems to be when they came to the US they had the Johansen name. they came from the domicile Lund. so they changed the name to Lund here. Nobody alive now knew of the Johansen name until yesterday! How do i figure out how to go further back? All I have is the 1900 census in Skiptvet that gives the parents names. which is a start, but how do i go back any further? Seems they change the names around alot!

Jens Marius Johansen dob 19 Jan. 1895 (my great grandfather)
father Johan Johansen
mother Johanne JOhansdatter
siblings: Edvin, Hans, Hilmar, Marie, and Asta
lived in skiptvet 1900

Here is a good starting point to begin your understanding on how to research your Norwegian ancestors. Just click on the highlighted link and explore this website.

Here is a dictionary that I find very useful when looking at the old Norwegian records.

So, on Edvin Johannsen ship records shows his fathers last name as Mortensen. So am I too presume his full name would be Johan Johannsen Mortensen. Meaning his fathers name is Morten?

No, if his name is Edvin Johansen and his fathers name is Johan Mortensen, then Johan's fathers name is Morten Something. A full Norwegian name would not likely contain two names deriving from the father.

Edvin Johansen who is the son of
Johan Mortensen who is the son of
Morten Something is the son of etc.

Many times the farm name is added to the other names, for example Jens Marius could be referred to in some Norwegian records as Jens Marius Johansen Lund meaning that he is the son of a Johan and has some relationship to the Lund farm.

But on the 1900 census it says Johan Johannsen and on the ship records Johan Mortensen. Could they use either one they wanted?? I am confused now.

Here is an example of how to search back in time. Kċarto gave you a hint that Jen Marius's parents were married on April 13, 1888. To find the record I would go through the following steps.
Go to Digitalarkivet, click on the English tab on the bottom if you like, go to Digitised parish registers, click on Read the digitsed parish registers, Under Velg fylkke (Choose county) find Ĝstfold and under Velg prestegjeld/sokn find Skiptvet. Look on the right for the correct date ie 1878-1900 Ministrialbok and click it. Find the event you are interested in, in this case marriage so use Ekteveide and 1888. Click on that and scroll down the page to 1888, There in the entry # 2 and date 13 April you will find the record for the parents of Jens Marius.

Now this is somwhat laborius and time consuming but it works. It works better if you have some idea of the years of the events.

yes this is all correct... thats why I am confused on the name now. When his brothers come the manifest lists their mother, Maren Johansen, so I presuming Johan had died by 1916

I would assume that this is the immigration record for Elvind. The manifest lists his mother as Martha Johanson near as I can read it.

Name: Edvin Johansen
Arrival Date: 23 Mar 1911
Birth Year: abt 1890
Birth Location: Nrw
Birth Location Other: stiebtvedt
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Southampton
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Oceanic

this is also correct. Hans Johansen came in 1916 on SS Bergensfjord and HIlmer came in 1922 on the Stavangerfjord.

I just looked at the Ancestry.com record for brother Hilmar and the reference to his mother Maren Johansen. So is the only place where you have found Johan Mortenson referrenced is on the immigration record for Jens Marius? If so you may have to assume that, that reference is incorrect and the family found in the 1900 Norwegian Census is correct as well as the names.
