A new member, I am looking for help please tracing my Norwegian ancestors. My grandmother Agnes Andine Arnesen was born in 1891 in Newport, South Wales to a Norwegian family. The 1891 census for England & Wales shows her parents Axel Oskar Arnesen and Emilie Arnesen (nee Jonsen ??) living in Newport, with her siblings Dagny Marie (born Norway), Anne Emilie, Peter and Laura Fredrikke (all born in Newport but births also registered in Bergen). From the Norwegian State Archives, I have a match for the marriage of Axel (born 1854) and Emilie (born 1849) on 18 May 1879 in Vestre Fredrikstad. (A correspondent in USA confirmed this is NOT the Axel Arnesen born in Grue in 1854). I also have a match for Dagny Marie born 21 July 1879, baptised 14 September 1879 also in Vestre Fredrikstad.

Help please in tracing these family links back to previous generation(s)

The marriage record is #21 - Aksel Oskar Andersen (Arnesen?) was 1. mate, born in Fredrikshald 1854 and his father was blacksmith Emanuel Arnesen (Andersen?), Emilie Janson was born in Hölens forsamling, Dalsland (Sweden) 1849 and her father was carpenter Peter Janson.

Axel Oscar was born May 9 1854, see #82. His parents were blacksmith Emanuel Arnesen and Andrine Marie Olsdatter.

The 1865 census: http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=7&filnamn=f60101&gardpostnr=586&personpostnr=8770&merk=8770#ovre
should help.

Axsel's dad has died, so it should be confirmed that he is the right person.

Emanuel Peters Arnesens mother, Christine Emanuelsdatter, was born in Sponvigen and baptized Dec 25 1789, see 7th record right page. Her parents were Emanuel Peters and Anne Magrethe Veyer. (1801 Christine lives with her aunt Karen Weyer.)

Emanuel Peters Arnesens father, Arne Jacobsen, is most likely the one in 1801.

[Les, many thanks for your posts. A couple of points :

1. On the archive link you knidly sent, I read Andrine's baptism date as 31 December 1815, hence logical sequence with birth date quoted. The name Andrine came down to my grandmother as her middle name, so this fits.
2. From the same archive record, I read Andrine's parents as Ole Berg and Anne Dorothea Pedersdtr. Is my reading correct ?? (Opens up my next search)
3. The 1865 census results come as a complete surprise - I had no idea Axel had so many siblings. The name of his sister Laura Frederikke recurs as two of Axel's daughters born in Wales who unfortunately both died in infancy, so again good fit. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. ]

[Einar, thanks for your posts too. Unfortunately I do not speak any Norwegian, so have struggled with the State Archives, even the English version. I note Emilie was born in Sweden and can now see this on the archive record - it explains my frustrated efforts to find her in the Norwegian archives !! And it now looks like I have to start struggling with the Swedish archives too !!!

Dave,
Your names for Andrine's parents look accurate. And Emanuel's baptism date should be 31 Dec. 1815.

I'll add the birth record for Axel's sister Anne Dorthea, born 27 May 1844. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7419&idx_id=7419&uid=ny&idx_side=-186

Would you like some help finding the other siblings, or prefer to do it yourself?

Les, I believe the baptism date for Andrine shold be 19 July 1816 (otherwise she would have been baptized before she was born)
Her father was a shoemaker and Andrine was their second child, the first one however died beore Andrine was born. The mothers name was Anne Dorthea Pedersdatter.

Les, Einer, I looked at this record again this evening. The header on the right hand page is 1816. Comparing the handwriting for entries 50 and 51, I think its clear Andrine's dob is 24 November 1815, and her baptism 19 July 1816.

Les, thanks for looking at this and confirming names - I'll seek to trace back these names later. Menatime, yes please, I certainly would appreciate help tracing Axel's other siblings. While the State Archives have the English language capability I don't find it very user friendly - maybe I am just not yet practiced enough in using the various search criteria.

This record indicates her birth date is 9 July 1855, and baptized 9 Dec. 1855. I have not been able to find her original birth record in the Halden files.
