Could you help me find out about Lars J. Offerdahl born 27 MAR 1843 in Sogn, Oppland, Norway. I think his name before Lars was Lewis Iverson as I find that on records on the land here in South Dakota. His wife was Rigndlia Hovland
Birth 24 Dec 1849 in Norway .
I was told he changed his name to Offerdahl but do not know why and I would like to find his father and mother and siblings and when he came to the United States and why.
Thanks

He wasn't born in Oppland - but was born in what was then Lærdal clerical district in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. He changed his name to the name of the farm where he was born as many Norwegian emigrants did and as a good number of Norwegian residents did around the turn of the century between the 1800s and the 1900s.
His birth/baptismal record -

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

Confusion about where he was actually from may be better understood when looking for him in the 1865 Norwegian census. For that census he appears to be working as a servant in Sogndal district of Sogn og Fjordane.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1420&kenr=010&bnr=0018&lnr=000

When he came to the United States would be easiest found in the US federal censuses where he lived after emigrating.

A candidate for Rigndlia Hovland may be Ragnilde Erichsdatter, she was born Dec 27 1849 and her parents Erich Olsen and Guroe Nielsdatter were at Hofland when she was baptized, see #19.

Ragnilde (Ragnild Eriksdatter Hofland) left Aardal March 21 1874, see #11.

On this page I think #2 is Iver Iversen Offerdal-------am I reading this right? If so that would be Lars Iversen's brother.
