My g-g-grandmother is driving me nuts, though she's long gone. DNA news leads me to think she may be the link to distant relatives and extending my documented tree.
But she's a slippery one, so I humbly turn again to you mavens.
I simply cannot establish her genesis. She's the Berte Marie Thorsdatter in the 1865 census with Arent Johnsen and three of their eventual eight children. It shows her estimated age at 35, and being from Stavanger.
So I thought I was finally making some headway. But then I digitally leaf through the Stavanger ministerial books beginning in 1830, and find that Berte Maria in various spellings was a very popular name, and I am utterly incapable of deciphering the priests' scribblings to find a father named Thor.
Have you any suggestions and/or shortcuts to get at my great-great granny so that she finally leaves me alone?

I notice that the 1875 Census gives a different birth location for Bertha Marrie Thorsdatter.

| As ever, lyndal, you're quick and informative. Seems like another possibility (as if there aren't enough already...), but I'm unclear on the geographical possibilities of the time. Would a baker from Fjelberg be more likely to bump into a future bride in Hellands or Stavanger? And is that a stupid question? |

Yup, Speedy. (Must be where you get the 'lyn' in the surname.)
It's back to Stavanger and all those Berte Maries, but at least you found a father Thor's surname (Larsen). Dusavik is (was) a place within the Stavanger area.

There is a record of Thor Larsen Haberg age 26 and Anne Thomasdatter age 28 leaving Stord, Hordaland in 1822. Some of the columns are a little hard to read.

I now know more about the movements of my ancestors of 118 year ago than I do about my five children today.
(I'm still wrestling with lyndal's "Perhaps a reach...." posting six ago.)
(Which - by the way - doesn't seem to be a reach at all.)
