Hi, I may be able to answer some of your questions.

I am one of Dominick Nicholsons grandsons. My father, James is Dominick's last and youngest son.

I asked my father some of these questions posted on here and this is what he told me.

Dominick was born in 1897 (he believes) and his mother (kathleen brown) was married at 16 or 17 years of age from what he believes although the marriage records posted here show otherwise... She was not divorced and remarried as you wondered... that is another kathy or cathy unrelated to my grandmother

He does remember talk about a mathen schmidt , but mathen may have passed away before my dad was born. He remembers they called him "pops" as a nick name.

now about 1322 sterling place:

My dads grand parents were the building superintendents! (kathleens parents)

And Yes my Great Aunt "Tessie" (Theresa Nicholson) married Peter Devany

There was also another family that lived in the building, the Higgins family. And 2 of my fathers brothers did marry 2 Higgins sisters!

So 1322 Sterling Place Brooklyn NY had 3 marriages from the residents that lived there!

Hi James
Thanks for the interesting reply. The house in 1322 Sterling Palace must have been a proper machmaker.
According to my research, Dominick was born in 1885 in Ireland.
Mathew Smith was born March 8, 1879 in Drammen Norway and traveled to the US in 1903. In Norway he was baptized Mads Christian Smith Jørstad.
He married Kathrine Browne about 1905. Kathrine was born in 1880 in Ireland. Their daughter Katherine was born in 1905.
Here is also the census of 1940:
1940 census: https://www.archives.com/1940-census/dominick-nicholson-ny-62074200

Hi Tarald,

1322 Sterling Place is a very interesting place indeed!

There seems to be quite a few discrepancies. Im not sure the Dominick Nicholson born in 1885 would be my Grandfather, that would make him much much older then his wife Catherine. I think there is some confusion here. If you look at the link you posted to the 1940 census , on that page you can also view the original image of the actual census document. Its more likely thats not my grandfather, he would have been much too older for my grandma and my father would have probably told that to me.

That document also shows a " Catherine Smith" on Line 29 Aged 50, Widow (WD) for martial status.. and right below her starts the Devaney family information

If the "Catherine" is "Katherine" that you believe is Mathew Smith's wife (widow) then she should be 60 years old, not 50 as given in the 1940 Census.

Now the census is voluntary and mistakes or half truths can be told.

If you look again, in the 1925 Census that was copied onto here Dominick is listed as being 26 and Kathleen as 21.
And in newspaper announcement :

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle (Brooklyn New York) published on 24 May 1922, page 21 col 6 "Marriage Licenses":
"Dominick Nichols, 23, 101 E 123d St, Mhtn
Kathleen Brown, 19, 1322 Sterling pl."

One thing is for sure, the ages for Dominick and Kathleen vary from document to document!

I believe the 1940 census is more a more accurate record. I will email you to discuss more

-James
