Hello,
I'm hoping that someone can give me some leads about my ggrandfather Thomas Johnson born in Oslo in 1853. He emigrated to Ireland (Queenstown, now Cobh) and married Catherine Sullivan of Cobh in 1870. On the marriage certificate he lists his father as John Johnson, farmer.
Any information that you can offer would be appreciated. Thank you.

What was Thomas usual occupation?
That death record lists him as American - so did he complete US naturalization? Have you searched for those records? |

The US 1920 census puts the couple in Chicago, they list that they came to the US in 1875 and he was naturalized in 1880. (Sometimes years get a little 'fuzzy' after that many years and mistakes can happen.) Unfortunately that census does not list an occupation for Thomas.
Names and vital dates of any children might help find the family in earlier censuses... |

Ancestry has over 10 family trees showing Thomas and Caroline with quite different information and Thomas dying in New Jersey in 1917. Caroline never immigrating to the US at all.
Which is the correct person to be investigating? |

The McCauley family tree comes up and has the birthdate of 5 Sept 1853 in Oslo and that he died 10 Dec 1917 in Port Reading, New Jersey, but is exceedingly shy of documentation. I guess some of the OPs information is a little suspicious to me as well. If he was born in 1853 and he married in 1870 that means he was only 17 when he married, though possible, he seems a trifle "wet behind the ears" for that. And within the family tree the first child comes in 1876 and they have for the first several years, a baby every year--what was happening from 1870 to 1876?

| If Thomas Johnson was a sailor at the advanced age of 50-60, most likely he was a sailor before as a much younger man. Perhaps he'll turn up in the monstring lists indexes for Oslo.. |

Hello and thanks for all of your responses! As a newbie I'm still trying to figure out how to respond to each individual response.
I know that our Thomas Johnson died in Port Reading, NJ not in Chicago. He was married to Catherine Sullivan and on the Marriage record it said that they both were of Full Age. They seemed young to me.
The last census that I have stated that he was an Alien so I don't believe that he ever became a citizen but I will still check.
I'm wondering if I can find out what ship he might have taken to Cobh and if I can find any information on his parents. All I have is what was on the Marriage certificate which showed his father as John Johnson, farmer.
