Greetings,

I am researching a man named Martin Ole Moen.
Born 1853 / Died in Seattle 1944.
He arrived in America 1879 and found his way to the Pacific Northwest in 1901.
His Mother's name was Christine Michaelson.
His Father's name was Ole Johnson Moen.
I have found many of his addresses while he was in Seattle. His occupations are listed as Mariner, Painter, Carpenter and Foreman for San Juan Fishing and Packing Co. Some of his PNW years are fuzzy but I cannot find anything on his first 26 years of life in Norway or where he spent the following 22 years once in North America.

Can anyone suggest what resources should I be combing through or can anyone help me find more information on this man? He isn't a relative but he interests me because he lived in a dory on Puget Sound and Lake Washington during the depression.

Where does the emigration date of 1879 come from.

You can look at the emigration records for Martin Olsen 1879 and see if you can find him. Here is the list I found

1879

Not a lot of good fits there. This may be the best, married and going to Portland

So Martin is the one who lived on a floating island at age 81?
The interview of Martin Moen in Seattle Daily Times Sunday, Feb 25, 1934 Page: 7 mentions that he came from Norway in 1879.

One Amalie is listed right after this married Martin Olsen, has the same place of residence, and is leaving with the same ship and also headed for Portland. Do you know the name of the correct Martin's wife?

Another thing; the death certificate lists Martin Olsen Moen, but you have also found records where the first name Martin Ole is used?

On the emigration for Amalie Jensen are two children a Agnes Nilson age 10 and Johan Hansen age 4. This looks to be their arrival but all listed as Olsen.

That's the one. I didn't have the actual death certificate so that is a bonus. Also, the 803 E Denny address is new to me. I had a gap from from 1938 at the Palmer Hotel on Dearborn until his death. This address is much appreciated! Thank you!

Yes! That is the one. That island was removed in the early '60's. Before it was gone I visited it without any knowledge of him and there were a few artifacts left. I came across the article about a year ago and have been trying to put his life together in a story but there are these big gaps. A very interesting life.

All the records that I have found list his name as Martin Ole Moen. Never Olsen. Also, the death certificate says that he was a widower which is new to me. I thought that he might be and that his marriage was a part of his life prior to coming to the PNW or maybe she died after arriving in the PNW. He started living a solitary life as a mariner around 1917 or so.

I would love to know if he came to America with a wife and what her name was. Maybe they were married here. I don't know.

Marriage #5 in 1879 is of target Martin and not Amalie but Anne:
SAH, Vinger prestekontor, Parish register (official) no. 12, 1871-1880, p. 393
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070111650132

Birthdate given for Martin in this record is 28 May 1852, so doesn't match the birthdate on the death certificate, but his father is Ole Johnsen.

This may be this Martin in 1865 census:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038039000940

Father listed as Ole Johansen but mother maybe Anne Johansdatter.

Not him as found in the 1910 census in Norway:

Looking at this from the standpoint of the parents names, using the indexed transcribed records at the digitalarkivet. with their roles defined as bride and groom and a marriage event year between 1825 and 1854, finds only this couple:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/327/pv00000003747582

They are found baptizing two sons in Loiten also, John in 1850 and Mikkel in 1852, but no Martin.

There is a tree on Ancestry for this family. Do not say what happened to Mikkel after this 1875 Census. The tree is a bit of a mess and not to be trusted, too many errors.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052061001055

Well this looks like Mikkel, marriage in 1882,

Mikkel Olsen
in the Norway, Church Records, 1812-1938
Name: Mikkel Olsen
Marriage Age: 30
Record Type: ekteskap (Marriage)
Birth Date: 1852
Birth Place: Norderhoug
Marriage Date: 9 jun 1882
Marriage Place: Løten, Hedmark, Norge (Norway)
Marriage Municipality: Løten
Residence Place: FRa Norderhaug
Entry Number: 9
Father: Ole Johnsen
Spouse: Petrine Larsdatter
