I think you have the correct Søfren because i have a baptism date of Jan 6, 1731. His father is shown as Soren Schiri. Tks for clearing up the Hofman mystery. Since I live in Florida I have no idea how to access bygdeboker records. I have done some minor translations of bygdeboker excerpts that have been sent to me.

What is the source for the information you have? You now mention Søfren and an exact date... where was this previously? This information came from where? Did it also give a more detailed location for that birth?

We researchers here in the US can borrow almost any Norwegian bygdeboks by Inter-Library Loan program through our local public library or a nearby participating genealogical library. You can do your own translating if you get a good Norwegian-English library and work at it.

The catalog at FamilySearch.org is also a great place to search for any titles, authors and publication detailed for books you might want to then try to obtain.

The Søren baptized Jan 6 1731 was the son of Søren Schiri, see 1st baptism on right page.
(This was in Grytten, Møre og Romsdal - far away from Sjernarøy).

The 07 March 1731 baptism took place at Sjernarøy i Nedstrand, Rogaland fylke. To see this notation, go to the blue bar above the page image. Go to the menu button "Biletinformasjon." Select "øvst." This option shows source information over (at top of) the page image.

Hopkins, your thought that Hofman came from Denmark seems confirmed by the great tree that Lyndal posted on 30/6: borgermaster Soren Jensen Hofman born Viborg Danmark 1595. Finally some clarity on this branch of my tree. You people can really DELIVER!

I don't see anything as "confirmed". There are no source references in that rather pretty online family tree. Therefore no way to try to verify what was claimed.

I've noticed several of my own ancestors in that online tree and some of the information disagrees with my own research or makes "leaps of faith" that I am unwilling to follow.
