On page one I posted the ships list for Knudt and going back and looking at the original manifest, I see directly under Knud is a Ivar. Ancestry.com has the first name slightly off making it somewhat more difficult to find.

You are right Hopkins, here is the arrival of the younger brother of Knudt, I guess? The F is probably an I for Iversen.

According to a Family Tree Ancestry.com Ivar Olsen Offerdahl and Kirstine Anfindsdatter had seven children, including Knudt and Ivar. The Tree covers most directly the following son.

To HOPKINS: Thanks! I don't understand a word of Norwegian, but in the area of Wilkin County and Richland County, there must be someone around who still knows Norwegian! I probably have some family around there whom, if I could identify, might know it. I don't suppose the LDS microfilm to which you refer is printed in English?
To LYNDAL40: Yes, he did briefly live in Wilkin County in 1885, just a few doors down from where my great-grandmother lived.

I don't remember having a big problem with that microfilm and I don't 'know Norwegian' either. There may have been some small details which escaped my understanding but I was after church NAMES and LOCATIONS of the churches and those were easy to deduce no matter the language. It was NOT a book which contained a great deal of narrative - just the simple facts.
The original church records I found at the old family church were kept on the exact same formats as the church records of Norway at the time - so using the knowledge I'd gained through study and application of John Follesdal's wonderful online pages for that type of record and translations of the standard format headings I'm not intimated by those either since a relatively small list of words are usually found. There were a very few sections where I came home with my most careful notes of what I'd seen and worked alone with a Norwegian-English dictionary to translate later, I was able to work out the 'gist' of that too. (The occasional bad handwriting encountered is another entire problem... and I always shudder at that whether researching in records of Norway, Germany, colonial New England, or trying to decipher a note left on the kitchen table by my spouse.) |

Thomas married Kristina Eirksdatter Hagen.
Ove Thomasen lived as widower on farm Granden 1900.

I am not an expert in DNA testing but wouldn't other relatives work as well. If Knud Iversen Offerdahl is your great-grandfather, then I assume that your 90 year old uncle is his grandson. His DNA and the DNA of some child of one of the other children of Iver Olsen Offerdal should be of value here. They would have children who woud be a second cousin to your uncle. In the list that Einar provide above is Lars born in 1843. We know from the Family Tree on Ancestry.com that he became Louis Offerdahl and lived in South Dakota. According to the Tree he had 12 children, nine of them were boys. All are dead now but they must have had a large number of male children. They would be second cousins to your uncle and I would think that one of them would be much easier to find than Anna has proven to be. |
