My paternal great grandmother was Karen Simensdr in the marriage information I have about her. She married Bernt Hermansen in Furnes, Hedmark, Norway on 8/16/1885. Her father was Simen Larsen. She was born January 8, 1857 and came to the USA about 1886 with her husband (I assume). I would like more information as to where she was born or baptized and perhaps some information from the 1865 census which might include her mother's name.

I read her birthdate as Jan 9 1857, see #17.
Her parents were living at Kaatorp when she was born.

Her husband was Bernt Hermandsen, Vold.

| Thanks so much. I wonder what Kaatorp is which is where her parents were living when she was born. Also I wonder if there would be information about birth or baptism for either of her parents (Simen Larssen (born about 1822) and Ingeborg Christofersdatter (born about 1829). Thanks |

Kaatorp (today Kåtorp) was the name of a farm. The farm does not exist anymore, today is built a retirement center in the area, see link.

Lise, born July 8 1853 at Freberg, #57,
Christian, born Jan 1 1855 at søndre Kaatorpeie, #10,
Karen, born 1857 (see earlier posting,
Anders, born March 10 1859 at Halsetheie, #58,
Ingeborg, born Aug 30 1861 at Alving, #107,
Ole, born Febr 17 1866 at Hoelseie, #20 |

A marriage record would give their fathers names to confirm a possible baptisimal record.

| I notice that higher up in these messages that I just reread today that Bernt Hermansen is listed as Bernt Hermansen, Vold. What does the Vold stand for? Is it a farm? He took the name Wold when he was in America and that is the name that still carries through. Could the Wold come from that Vold I see in that section above? It is so interesting, as I was just talking to a relative from Alaska about where the Wold name came from and they had no idea. They were told that Bernt thought there were too many Hermansens in the USA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

The name likely comes from the farm name Vold or Wold spelling depends on era etc. Here is the entry for the farm Vold in Oluf Rygh's book on Norwegian Farm Names from Hedmark, Vang parish.
