Hi. I'm new to using the digital archives and could use some help reading this record. I'm interested in the #2 marriage record between Tobias Hansen and Rachel Berntsdtr. Any help with the translation would be much appreciated.

WOW! Thanks so much to both of you for the info!

That's really interesting about the 1865 census. Do you know what time of year it was taken? I believe the family left for the US in 1865. That's definitely the correct family given the younger children.

As for the original record, any clue what the dates are over on the right side (28 July 1838 & 1 Oct 1836)?

The records online stop at 1826 (temporary), so for that reason I couldn´t find Rachel´s parents or grandparents, but it might be Bernt Pettersen in 1801 census living on farm Næsvaag.
(keep it as a possibiliy for a later lo-up, but these three brothers was the only Pettersen´s in the 1801 census):

Berent Pettersen age 8, two brothers: Rasmus and Petter Johannes, Parents: Petter Johannes_brynilsen, age 40, Pilot and Cotter without land and Sigri Rasmusdatter age 51.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=f11111&gardpostnr=85&personpostnr=2018&merk=2019#ovre

So for that reason, person nr 2003 on the same page on farm Næsvaag could well be Rachel´s mother. Rachel Amundsen, age 8 and four siblings.

Parents: Amund Jensen age 52, married 2. time, free farmer and wife Anne Aasmundsdatter age 40.

Hans Torsteinsen would be born ca 1780, Anne Evensdatter ca 1790.
Bernt Pettersen ca 1790, Rachel Amundsdr ca 1788.

Servant Hans Tostensen (19) on the Miaasund farm in Bakke parish, Vest-Agder.

Possibly Anna Evensdtr (8) on the Giendahl Ydre farm in Bakke.

Bakke parish is today under Flekkefjord municipality.

Hans Torstensen & Anna Evensdr
Marriage: 10 JUN 1807, Bakke, Vest-Agder

Bernt Pettersen & Rachel Amundsdr
Marriage: 15 OCT 1820, Sokndal, Rogaland.

I agree it must be Bernt & Rachel living on the Næsvaag farm in census-1801; Bernt is christened 18 SEP 1791, and is the son of Petter Johannesen_brynilsen & Sigri Rasmusdtr, Rachel is christened 12 MAY 1793, and is the daughter of Amund Jensen & Anne Aasmundsdtr.

Looking at the marriage record I would like to point out that the column to the right of the names has the heading "Brudgommens Føde- og Opholdssted. Brudens Fødested" (The bridegrooms place of birth and residence. The brides place of residence.) - therefore for the groom: Store-Refsland. Opholdssted Berglund - for the bride Mong.

WOW. Once again, you all are amazing! Thanks so much for the info, links, and comments.

Not to abuse your generosity, but if anyone can help me find more info on these individuals, I'd appreciate it:

-Ole Torkelson (Americanized last name). According to different sources, he was either born in 1860 or 1861. One source says the date was Oct 23, 1960. (I haven't been able to evaluate the authenticity of the sources yet.) One source lists his birthplace as Richarderi, Konnsberg, NOR. (I'm assuming "Konnsberg" is actually "Kongsberg"?)

-Ingeborg Kittelsdtr Evensen. That's her last name according to her obituary. The obituary also says she was born 23 Aug 1862 in Sigdal and her parents were Kittel and Gjertrud Evensen.

Ole and Ingeborg were apparently married in 1887 (one source says May 4, 1887) but I have no idea where they were married. According to the family story, they left for the US immediately after getting married. The 1900 U.S. census also indicates they emigrated in 1887.

Once again, any help would be appreciated.

Two sisters, Sigrid and Kari, and a house-maid, 17 year old Sigrid Stenersdatter.

Best men : Nils Skinnes
Hans J. Skinnes

Couple nr 3:

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5882&idx_id=5882&uid=ny&idx_side=-214

Kittil was born Nov. 7. 1835, parents: Even Olsen Lybekk og Sigrid Andresdatter

I can´t find Gjertrud´s records (my have overlooked her), but it´s likely her sister Kari who was Bap. 1835. Her parents was:
