My grandparents, John Hendrickson and Martina Davidson Hendrickson were both born in Norway between 1880 and 1884. I have found my Grandmother, who was Martina Davidsdatter (1883) born to David Stenson (Stenesson) and Solveig Larsdatter at Rondestveit (later lived at Kvitnes farm), and have found her birth record. I have not been able to find John Hendrickson (his American name) as I don't remember where he was born or what his father's name was. What can I do? I know he was from around Bergen, possibley from an island community, and that he was the youngest of the family. He left Norway sometime around 1903, ended up in Valley City North Dakota, where he met and married Martina. They moved to Southwestern North Dakota and homesteaded a farm south of the town of Rhame, where I grew up. Grandma had several brothers that lived there. plus one sister, Bertha, who married a Nils or Nels Jensen, Her brothers were John, Knute, and Ingebrigt Davidson. They left a brother David in Norway, and I think a sister Gertrud. Any and all information would be appreciated. My Aunt Mardy, (Martha Dorothy Louise Hendrickson Tatro Merwin) would like to know if I have any luck before she passes on. thanks

Dorothy

Martina was from Ulvik in Hordaland? (Also 'close' to Bergen you know)
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=1233&kenr=001&bnr=0004a&lnr=00

You don't remember where John Hendrickson was born or what his father's name was... that means you once knew??

Can you please tell me counties that Valley City ND and Rhame ND are located in?

Just in case you missed the previous page for Martina Davidsdatter, which gives the current family living there:
NHDC for David Stenessen and family
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=1233&kenr=001&bnr=0004&lnr=00

The US census for 1910 has John Hendrickson and family living in Bowman county, ND.
John immigrated in 1901, and Martha immigrated in 1907.
There are also census' for 1920 and 1930.

Family Search has a John Hendrikson born 1881, Bergen, Norway, Spouse: Martina "Martha" Davidson. With the name of the submitter.

Family Search Social Security Death Index for John Hendrikson, gives his date of birth: 24 Oct. 1881.

That is all for now.

Dorothy, if you need some of this census information, I can give it to you later.

Jan, your link to Johannes didn't work. All the US census' for John indicate a 1901 immigration. That's if Dorothy can confirm we have the right guy.

Hi,
I just wanted to put up the name and parents to see if they was recognized by the author of this topic. The links would not have made any differance at this stage.

But it was a wild shot. I see now that Johannes Mikal Henriksen has at least 6 younger siblings, so he's out of the picture...

Birthdate fits, so it must be the right guy!

Leaving Bergen on April 3rd, 1902.

So Henrik Johan Thorbjørnsen Gjøsæther has been americanized to John Hendrickson... :)
He has later taken the last name of his father, Torbjørn Olai Henriksen.

I have a copy of the birth register from his parish, but it is in my papers at my home in Ellensburg, Wa and I am at Ocean Park Wa which is 5 hours away. I will be able to get it at the end of the month but I am working on this now. My Aunt doesn't see, so can't read me her copy over the phone. Lame excuse but that's it. Rhame North Dakota is in Bowman County, but don't know for sure right this moment about Valley City. Somewhere in Eastern ND. Thanks for this information. I had found the census from ND for 1910, but couldn't find info on anything else.

Thanks for this information. I had found the David Stenessen family, but have found nothing on John other than his naturalizaton papers and the 1910 census. I most likely don't know enough about doing this do get it done. Knowing the language would most likely help. Please let me know what to do further.
