I am looking for information on a Pastor Ritland. His first name may have been Karl (Carl), and he must have been a pastor at a church in the US. He was probably from Suldal in Rogaland, and he must have been born around 1880. He was a twin. Around 1910 he visited Norway and took a good many photographs from the county of Suldal and the hamlet Sand. After his return to the US, he made up several albums and sent them back to Norway. These albums have now turned up, and the pictures have been scanned by local cultural workers at Sand. Unfortunately, the identity of Pastor Ritland is a mystery. I would greatly appreciate any information about him!

Thank you! This information looks promising. Many people from Suldal settled in Elroy, Wisconsin, so it is not unlikely that this is our man.

John Ritland is definitely our man. Could someone help me interpret the name of the seminary John attended? In Jackie's reply it is listed as "U.C. Sem."

Thanks to everyone for the additional information! You are correct that John's father was no doubt Ole Johannessen Ritland in the 1865 census. The biographical sketch available from the Wisconsin Historical Society may also prove of interest. Martin Ritland in Oregon may also be a useful reference.

I found the information you posted about Pastor John Ritland on the Norwegian Heritage board, and am interested in learning more. My husband is a relative of Pastor Ritland (his grandmother was Georgine Ritland, his sister) We would be interested in learning more about the pictures you found and his trip to Norway, so we can give this information to his other relatives.

Thank you

Beth F

I'm not sure this link will take you there but here it is:

Just in case it doesn't work Norsk Luthereske Prester i Amerika is available in Google books. Did Georgine have a sister named Louise?

Hi, John Ritland is my grandfather (father of my father). I found this site when I was googling his name. His middle initial is M but I cannot find the full middle name. It could be Mark, which is my middle name, my family has a tradition of giving middle names of parents/grandparents. I have visited the family home in WI in the 1960's but John had already died. I live in Vancouver Canada now. - Kermit Ritland

Your g. grandfather, Ole Johannesen (=Johns father), was born Oct 19 1859, see #76.
His parents were Johannes Thormodsen and Ranveg Larsdatter, Ritland.
