Hello,

I am researching my ancestors in Norway. My great-grandmother and her 5 sons ( I think) emigrated to North America in 1908. Eventually, they immigrated to the Province of Alberta, Canada, and set up a homestead farm outside of Storm Alberta.

There was no contact with relatives who remained in Norway, so I am starting from scratch with this research.

I have my Grandfather's original birth certificate which lists his birth on November 15, 1895, in Furnes Parish. His Father was Mikkel Larsen and his Mother was Permille Eriksdtr (?)

I am attaching a copy of the birth certificate and a letter which I have been told was permission to leave Norway. If someone here could be so kind as to translate the birth certificate and the letter, I would be very grateful.

I'm not certain that the image was uploaded as I am unfamiliar with HTML.

Mikkel and Pernille with children in 1891. Anders, born 1879, did not travel with the rest in 1908, and Mina, who did travel with them, was not listed with the rest i 1900.

Mikkel and Pernille's marriage in 1872. Neither farm name matches Gjerlubakken, but young people and people who did not have their own land would often move about. "Deglaneie" is probably a misreading of "Deglum-eie", i.e., a small cotter's place under the farm Deglum.

Here they are in 1875 with two sons, named after the spouses' fathers. Grown children sometimes did not follow their family to America. In many cases they had already emigrated, and would welcome the rest when they had settled.

Mikkel Larsen died in 1906 (#8). It says he was born at lille (little) Deglumseie and died at Gjerlaugbakken, which is the same as Gjerlubakken.

Mina is likely the "barnepige" babysitter in this household. Pernille is also listed in the household as a temporary resident:

Family in 1891 census. Mina is there. Sometimes children were helping out in other households at a very early age. Could explain why she is not liste dwith the family in 1900.

From the Warren Sheaf pub. Thursday 25 Jan 1900 page 6, column 1 "Oak Park and Big Woods News":
"Erick Mikkelson who has been working over in North Dakota, is now making his home with Andrew Erickson."...

Same paper, same issue, same column, page and column title:
"Messrs. Lars Mikkelson and Henry Nelson, of Oak Park, made a trip to Grand Forks last week."

Alfred's baptism in 1895 (#13, upper half). Brother Lars one of the witnesses.

Edit: You beat me on this one one, Jackie, but I keep this post, since the record is in a different church book. (Ministerial book vs. "Klokkerbok".)

Thank you so much, everyone! The information is fascinating. I am just learning how to navigate the Digitalarkivet website and have created a profile.

If anyone who reads Norwegian, I have Alfred's birth certificate and a letter (contract?) from the local authorities allowing my great-grandmother and her sons to leave Norway and immigrate to North America. I would really like to know what the documents say. I have them as img documents on my computer and can email them to someone to read. All I need is someone to provide me with their email address so that I can send them to you.

I am not able to figure out how to upload them to this website.

Nice bit of work by you two Tore and Jackie. The family trees for this family on Ancestry.com provide a good illustration on why one should be very careful of trees on Ancestry. Especially for trees managed by Americans when the tree ventures from America to Norway. I find 26 trees on Ancestr for family

Focusing on Erich Mikkelson found with the family by Jackie with the family in the 1900 census in Minnesota. The 1875 Census lists him as born in Furnæs, Hedmark. In the Ancestry trees I find him listed as born in Ringsaker, Hedmark as the closest birth placer to Furnæs. But I also find him born BIRTH 23 JUL 1873 • Stolen, Oppdal, Sor-Trondelag, Norway as well.

That leaves him with two sets of parents only one ow which is correct.
